Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Miss Sarah Lee sure was moody today. Stomping her foot and not wanting to stand still in the barn. She was supposed to have been put to pasture the 15th but she's still in. I haven't said anything caz it's so muddy but tomorrow she goes out.

Does Rusty over-reach a lot? Just curious, beacuse we had a TB that used to pull shoes left and right, wether he was playing or working. Got to the point where he wore bell boots almost all the time, just to protect him from himself.

Well, it's good that he's so willing to learn. I'm still new to the thread, so I don't know everyone's history yet. I just assumed that ecurbh was already a horse person when ya'll met.
LOL!!! I LOVE these things! Keep 'em coming.
The only time he has ever overreached is when he is running a bucking out in the pasture. He has never done it when riding. I think he just get very exuberant, he really slings himself around when playing.

I used to have a horse that over reached and would loosen the front shoes. I believe this is called forging. Anyway, a good farrier can fix this easy. Found a link for you that will give you a better explanation than I can.

Vaccinations..
We've recently had a rethinking of what is neccessary and what may be causing more problems then they prevent..
We've had founder and foot problems post-Potomac fever vacs and a mare and a baby who actually got the disease immediately post-vac..Potomac is treatable when caught early.
Rhino and influenza have caused significant and long lasting allergic reactions in several horses..
(the only time I ever had a flu shot, I got sicker then I'd ever been in my life..developed pneumonia and now have asthma issues because of it)
Strangles is pretty ineffective after the first 3 minutes and most horses get exposed early and develop immunity naturally ..
We're down to administering only EEE and WEE, west nile, and tetanus in our barn...
The West Nile is still under discussion, because everybody and their dog has been exposed to mosquitos by now (around here anyway) and the number of human cases is very few... the vet says if we were all tested we'd all probably exhibit the immune factors..

Personally, I have never had trouble or heard of trouble caused by any of the equine vaccinations.

My farrier has begun leaving Bay's shoes overhanging longer to try to encourage heel growth. He said Bay might overstrike and pull shoes this way, but he hasn't yet. But he also has been trimming the front of his toe (not entirely 'squared' but more severe than normal) to facilitate breakover to ease his Navicular.
I've always gone along with the vet's recommendations too, now he's recommending otherwise...
He's been treating horses all over my state for 30 years, but he's not liking what he's seeing lately, and has stopped all but the eee/wee, tetanus, and west nile on his own horses..
Interesting, like I said. I have never questioned vaccinations because for me they have been zero consequence..... but I also never hear of horses 'catching' any of the diseases we are vaccinating for, with the exception of strangles. So I have to wonder if we are applying vaccines across the whole nation for illnesses that are not even found in some places.
Here's a link to an old FR thread about the possibility that vaccinations actually provide protection for much longer than 1 year and that vaccinataing every year might be causing problems. It made me think twice about my vaccination schedules.

Interesting. I guess it depends on where you live. Rabies happen around here and dogs and cats required every year. I don't know about horses. It's required yearly by the owner where I stable. The vet I usually use mentioned that some he prefers every 6 mo. I used the house vet on Sarah Lee and he said every year but likes to vacinate in the spring and won't do anything but help her if I pop her early. This surprises me because the family vet usually updates me about new stuff. I'm going to ask him about this. Thanks for the link.
Well I had a really really great ride. :-) Did a lot of no stirrup work, and she had me working on using my seat to stear. That was really cool. Did a lot of canter work too. By the time I was done I was beat! :-)
