The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It's not selfish at all:') If you don't take care of you, you can't take care of him. We all know that if he changes you will be right there with him but you are no good to him with pneumonia.

It might well be warranted---but over concern is better than not enough

I get goofy about my own Fuzzy (who will outlive most of us!)

keep me up on what goes on...

It's a painkiller. If the pain stops, the horse will relax.

I thought so. I'm still here. My boss keeps finding things for my husband to do. He hates it when we go out of town:'(

How are the lessons going? I keep finding things that I was doing wrong. I was only putting my toes in the stirrups (figured easier to get my foot out if I needed). Now it's uncomfortable. If I can't bring them up she's going to order me "youth" fenders:'(

I'm home.

Rusty still looking a bit down, not worse, not really better. I did empty out all the feed in his feeder, what I had put in there yesterday, and put fresh in, he ate about half. He was also talking to me when I was walking out there like he usually does at feeding time. This isn't colic. I'll get an antibiotic tomorrow.

Had a lot of time to think about what to do with him. I really think I will try to sell him. I'm wearing out worrying about his problems. seems we take 2 steps forward with him, then 1 1/2 back. Of course the problem is finding a buyer. I might look in to donating him to one of those theraputic centers. He'd be fine for kids being led around. We'd at least get the tax deduction, and he'd have a good home.

Does anyone think this could have been brought on from being rode 2 days in a row? I didn't ride hard, but the first day we went 2 1/2 hours, the second 2. I hadn't intended to ride him 2 in a row, but that guy came and tried Harley and cs rode Rock, so Rusty was all that was left.

Well we are fixing to pull out in about 15 minutes. The compressor out of the house AC and we are going to pick up another one. I take back all my posts about living without. This house isn't made to air out even though the den cool. We offered to put the kids up in a hotel until we get back. They don't want to though. I guess I'll leave them a credit card in case they change their mind.

Poor Rusty. Maybe he'll shake this soon. How old is he? How was your trip?

He's just 6.

The trip was a funereal. Lots of people there who said "I haven't seen you since you were this high:)". So parts of it were fun. But an aunt and uncle of mine are very near gone now too. I'm really worried one or both will go next week when I'm gone. I hate that for my dad's sake. I hate that his family wouldn't be there with him. Kristy told me her and Charlie would go if it's next week. I don't see how they will make it till tomorrow.

IMO, about Bay, from what you've said, if he's not limping or favoring it, it's not serious. And my philosphy is "if it's not broke, don't fix it:)"

Maybe making him part of a theraputic riding program is the best thing, depending on how bombproof he is. I'd certainly question how heavily he's used though. Poor guy, I feel really bad. He'd certainly be part of a good thing, though.

I used to volunteer at a therapeutic riding program and they treated the horses with kid gloves. I was at Riding Unlimited in Ponder, Texas but there are lots of them around. Spend a couple of days volunteering at one and you'll see if it's a good place, although I've never seen a bad one.

I didn't work with children, I worked with adults. They were something else, I tell ya. If I ever get the time I'm going to go back and volunteer again.

I did theraputic riding for kids. It was a lot of fun and very rewarding. :-)

Sounds like a long day.... good to see everyone I am sure, but sounds like a sad time still to come for all.

Donating him to a theraputic riding center would be good I think. They don't ride hard and have an awful time getting good young horses. Most people want to donate 30yr olds on their way to greener pastures.

Is there a University near you with a equine program? They also will sometimes take horses as donations, and that would be good in that they may find out what the problem is.

I wish you luck and am glad you had a safe journey today.

I don't know how to advise you on Rusty. I understand your fatigue.

I am undecided about whether Bay's leg should be taken more seriously. It hasn't changed all day in the amount of swelling, and though when needed he seems to walk on it without limping, he is spending a lot of time standing and resting it. It's just in the way is all, a minor injury that will get better, but we'd like to speed it along so ecurbh and I can ride together this weekend.

Does he have all out navicular, or just navicular changes?

I guess I am not sure what the distinction is... This is my first time through this. He was diagnosed as having pain in his heels that is consistent with Navicular Syndrome, but he has not been X-Rayed. It was offered... along the lines of "We can x-ray and know for sure, or we can just treat him and give him the corrective farrier work for his heels and see if he gets better." He responded well to the first stage treatment.

Later on, if he isn't staying sound anymore on Ixosuprene, there is a second level treatment of cortizone injections directly into the foot. We'd x-ray before doing that. Each treatment would last 3 months. It was offered as a way to perhaps keep him comfortable and still working at the second stage. I won't nerve him. It's very expensive, and not assured that he'd be rideable. By then, he'd be 25. At that point, it's keep him comfortable with Bute as long as he enjoys living.

Thanks all.

All things work together for good. That guy that came and tried Harley is the one that gave me the idea of a theraputic riding center. He didn't know about Rusty's problems, but was just telling me about one close that his girlfriend works at. That got me to thinking. I've heard of them before and know they have a shortage of horses alot of times. I don't know if they would take one that has problems like his tho. I was just trying to figure out what to do with him other then putting him down.

OSU is in close, and I've taken a horse there years ago.

Just came in from last feeding of the day, he still hasn't finished the afternoon feeding, so I guess he's about the same. I'll call the vet in the morning.

Fair enough.... of course a program like that has all the promise of being a great home. Worth checking out.... And let us know what you learn from talking to the vet.
