Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Good point, but I don't think it's a bowed tendon. It's all soft puffiness, and I think a bowed tendon would make him more lame on it. He hasn't been workin' in the last week, just knocking around the paddock.
How's Rusty doing?
I put topicals on if cuts are still open... but usually not after they are closed over and dry. If it looked infected I'd upen it up, but it doesn't really. It didn't look fresh, for all I know he may have had this already and it went un-noticed last night when we put them in.
FWIW, We don't have flies any more since the temps started dropping.
Lucky you. I'm spraying once to twice a day. Some of the horses still even wearing fly masks.
Good morning,
I'm glad to hear that Rusty is not worse. Sounds more like he is catching a cold or is sore or something like that than it does colic.
Have a safe day.
Just my opinion here, for what it's worth. Is it possible he's run into something during the stall building? I don't wrap to keep swelling down usually, because I use that to monitor what's happening. Just hose down a leg with cold water to bring swelling down or in the case of suspected wire or nail type injury, stick the whole leg in a bucket of warm water and epson salts for awhile.
If it swells more, check to see that it's not some kind of punture wound, in which case it needs to be kept open so that it will heal from the inside.
He's still off his feed, just kind of sluging around. He has been laying down but not rolling.

Hmmm.... I don't ~think~ he did this related to the stall building, their area was kept clean and there isn't any protruding nails or wire around. If he had done it while turned out in the back forty where it's rough and tangled, I'd think he snagged it on something, but the pasture he's been in is clean and obstacle free, that is why I am thinking he kicked and struck himself in some display intended for the ladies.
I can unwrap it if you don't think it's helpful. Should I Bute him again? and if so, when?
Wow.... I sure hope he gets over this by nightfall.
It doesn't look like a puncture wound does it? If he'll tolerate it, I'd reccommend hosing the area too. I wouldn't bandage it too too tightly, because of circulation issues. If the swelling get worse, which it doesn't look like it's too bad right now, you could apply wrapped ice packs too. Is he sound?
OK I think I'll probably go out in a bit and take the bandage off... if the swelling has been pressed out any, I think that will tell me alot, if it is just fluid buildup from a blow. He's walking around on it just fine in pasture, not short-striding or stiff or limping on it, so I don't think I have the bandage too tight.
Thanks ladies, and gents.... Right now, I think it is a ~fairly~ minor event but I wanted to find all the options to try if this looks like it will become significant.
No. He's on a different medication for his Navicular that primarily helps increase circulation (Isoxuprene). He rarely gets Bute. I gave it to him already this morning because I thought it made sense to give him anti-inflammatory for the swelling.
You are probably right.... I just still feel pretty sick myself and would get pretty chilled outside with a hose. I don't ~want~ to have to do that unless I really have to.
If he looks "ok" , with being sick I would hesitate to go out in the cold and get wet too.
My horse was on bute for his navicular before the vet got smart and put him on Isoxuprene. The bute ended up giving him an ulcer. :-/
Well, there may come a day where he gets it more often, but he isn't there yet. :~\
Pretty selfish I know, but I don't think he's that bad off, and I think for him, being out moving and walking on it does a lot toward get his circulation going for healing. I just went out and took the wrap off, still a little puffy but he's not favoring it. I'll check on it and adjust as necessary this evening.
