The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah - I was thinking, even if I got some to have on hand, I don't know if I could do IV injections. Might ask my vet about it next time I have him out.

hehe. Sorry. I guess it's second nature for nurses. As long as things flow well most health problems fixable. From the horse people that I have talked to, this is even more critical with horses. I just worry about sending that lady a post with "no rolling" :')

Age does that too..... my dad starts out from the same place. All health is related to the bowel.

You can do Banamine IM, it just doesn't work as fast that way.

If you keep some on hand be sure and ask your vet what the dose is for a colic. This dork I used to volunteer with had a colicking horse and she very proudly said, "I was able to give him 2 cc's of Banamine in the muscle". The dose for a colicking horse is 12 cc's. 2 cc's did absolutely nothing and she thought I was a nut when I told her 12 cc's was the dose for a colic. Hopefully she asked her vet when I was out of earshot.

What does it do? Relax the bowel? Following the posts, I thought it was a sedative.

OK - we have a ~second~ medical case for the day. Not serious, just wonder if I did all you guys would do.

Discovered a swollen BACK pastern (ankle) this morning on Bay, mild puffiness all around the lower cannon bone, and a small scabbed over place right on his shin. No significant swelling below the joint in the fetlock, mostly above the joint. I think he ~probably~ kicked himself in the shin, unless one of the ladies happened to get him there.

I Buted him - two tabs - and put on a pressure bandage fairly tight below the point of the scab, to prevent more swelling.

I did not tear the scab off or treat with any topicals, since it had already closed and the wound itself doesn't look infected. It didn't feel hot, and he isn't reluctant to stand or walk on it this morning.

Anything else I really should do? It's in a tough spot to ice, and I really thought getting turned out and moving would do the most good, but I don't know for sure.

Did you feel around for heat near the swelling before you bandaged?

I wondered if Sarah Lee was watching me yesterday but I'm not sure. When I went to mount , I was too front on the block and she moved forward real slow and stopped. I started to fuss at her but the trainer stopped me and said "no, amazingly I think she may have been adjusting for you". She wants to see if she does it again. Then as I was practicing leaning over puting rings on cones and one time was too far away and struggling and she just kind of scooted over a few inches, closer to the cone. Maybe nothing or I cued her and we were just reading things into her behavior but interesting huh?

Yeah - it didn't feel overly warm, imho.

Watching him just now walking in the pasture, he doesn't seem to favor it.

Probably something we ought to have on hand, anyone can get injured anytime.... I just wonder if it's warranted in this case or if I am just worrying over a little owie.

The second picture doesn't look good.

Can't really tell in the picture but Google pictures on bowed tendon and see if it look like any there.

Its probably not, but better safe then sorry.

Well, certainly once she understands the game, she may assist you in it!

Good. And moving around is probably better for a minor injury than being stalled.

Since I can't cover my horses cuts I put antibiotic cream on to hopefully keep the flies off and prevent an infection. I suppose they could build up a tolerance but I've treated a lot of cuts and scrapes this last year and none got infected. JALSHO
