The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I like to think of crowhopping as a temper tantrum and bucking as horses's decided way of telling you that he is very displeased. :-)

Yeah, I'm finally legal:'). I'll post a pic later. It took almost the entire 6 months. Funny, I had a background check, cleared by the feds and bought my weapon at a gun show in less than 30 minutes but it took the SoTX "forever".

I think all of this is a crook anyway. Who, who has a hx and intends violence going to go thru legal channels like everyone else? I wonder how many robbers have been traced back to buying their guns legitimately?

I like the term crowhopping vs bucking. In my head, it sounds easier to manage:')

Glad you finally got through the system! Do you go shooting much and do you enjoy that? I sure do, and I used to shoot a lot.... Lost my source of all the free ammo I could shoot. When I go, I like to shoot a lot, so it's expensive now.

As bad a rap as Washington gets for being liberal, we have the best gun law of anywhere I've seen. It's a shall issue state... get CW Permit in less than a week via mail, and up until this last time it was issued over the counter while you wait. No class is required.

I didn't mind the class. I needed it but IMO it shouldn't be mandatory. We try to go to the range at least once a month. I usually shoot about 100 rounds and stop. Eddie does a lot more. He is also talking about wanting to get Okie used to firing. Where he's gonna accomplish that, I have no idea. :')

Ever tried "skeet"? A place just opened up near us and we have been talking about checking it out.

Wow. Nice. There's so much BS to go through here that I haven't even bothered to get my LTC. I just don't have the time to put into the classes and such. And depending on your town, you need two letters of recommendation, and you have to get fingerprinted, and I believe that you even have to get a background check.

Hair and Becky probably already heard this story but I knew nothing about guns. I thought I would learn in class. We took a written test and I scored the highest and was getting a little cocky until he said "ok, ley's go to the range and test." NO PRACTICE!. We got there about 10-15 minutes before he did and Eddie taught me how to shoot dry in the truck.

Skeet shooting is a LOT of fun. Yes, I belonged for a long to a club that did skeet shooting in evenings under lights in the summer. Was a great way to keep shotgun skills up during the off season. I haven't done it now since I retired my Labrador from hunting.

I agree that the class, and learning gun safety and all that is important for a new shooter. It's that it is required across the board that would bug me, that they think people wouldn't care to learn gun safety (for our own good) without their mothering.

We have background checks, and get fingerprinted too, but those are pretty instant. The week-wait this last time around is for mental health history, which is a new requirement, and which they don't have instant access to.

Letters of recommendation? from who?

We have a mental health check too. I think that the letters of recommendation are from a person that knows you and can vounch for your sanity. :-) But that varies town to town. Some are more rigid about their gun policies than others.

Exactly. Our state also tacks on a bunch of riders. You can't owe child support, be behind on taxes and a lot of other stuff that are important but have nothing to do with gun safety IMO. Citizens are only being "allowed" their constitutional right if they have been a good little boy or girl. I also strongly disagree regarding "all" felonies. If someone has paid their time.... If they are a high risk then they should not have been released from prison IMO. If someone with evil on their mind wants a gun they will get one, and I doubt if they will ask, "please" from the government.

Well if you are a bad guy messing with me there is good news and bad. The good is that I probably won't kill you. The bad is that you would probably wish I had. I aim center but tend to shoot low:')

If they were going to bother to test, it should at least be meaningful skill... The ability to point and hit your target is the easy part. The situational decision making, the legal and ethical judgment calls you must make when deciding to use lethal force would be the valuable part.

But that's just my opinion after all ;~D The gubmint knows best, right?

I wonder how Becky's ride is going. I am sure the horse will do fine, it'll be a question of whether the guy is willing to spend....

I know it was her plan to sell all along, but I think she'll be more than a little sad to see this horse drive out the driveway.

Good morning everyone. Fingers crossed the horse sale goes well. You all have a good day, cold and rainy here, snow on the hill headed my way.

The ride was great, the horse was great, and the guy liked him, but seems to be leaning towards wanting a gaited horse. The group he rides with mostly rides gaited horses, and they move out fast, he said 7 miles an hour. I agree at a trot that would kill you on a Quarter horse if you didn't post, and you could tell he didn't like that "Up down stuff:)".

But he also said, he needs to decide if he is going to continue to ride with this group, they are in Mo. so he has a long drive to go with them. HE said if he finds a group around here they would probably be riding Quarters, so then he'd want a Quarter. But I think he leans towards the gaited ones.

We rode a couple of hours, I did call cs and she went with us.

We didn't get the 80 degree sunny day we were suppose to get. It's chilly damp and gray, when we took off at the start it was very foggy.

No doubt I will miss the horse when he leaves:). He is good, you don't find them like him often, especially at his age. But I still really want to sell him.
