As a result of the dissolution of the internet startup I worked for, 4 of us original employees have gained ownership of the company's domain name: OOP.COM
I'm in the process of determining how best to sell it. I've gotten evaluations of between $2,500 and $55,000. Anyone have any suggestions?

KEYWORDS: domainname; objectoriented; oop; oopcom; url

Just wondering how much it might be worth, and the best method for marketing it and selling it. Auction? If so, where? Directly contacting potentially interested companies/parties?

I don't think so. You'll be lucky to get $150 for it.

I think there needs to be someone who would want the name before you could sell it. Maybe the times have passed me by, but does "oop" mean anything?

I've already gotten an offer for $2,500. Here's a thread on a discussion board dedicated to the marketing and sale of domain names:

It's quite a thriving industry, I'm finding, and I've only been looking into this during the past 2 weeks (since getting the "ok" to sell it).

Go to the person who told you it was worth $50k and tell him you'll sell it to him for half that. An easy $25k for him. If he thinks his valuation is worth anything. Which it isn't.

OOP stood for "Object Oriented Programming." We've been bought out by a larger company, and now we focus on voice application development. So "OOP" is no longer relevant to what we do....

object oriented programming for a start.
For a 3 letter (not character, but 3 letters) .com, you should be able to get the low end of that estimate pretty easily. More, if someone really wants it.
Ebay is a good way to go...might have to put it up a few times, but it does give a good bit of exposure.
To: Theo
Look on the NYSE and if there is a symbol that matches, contact the company and tell them it is for sale. Three letter domain names (especially .com) are extremely rare and are expensive to get.

"I've already gotten an offer for $2,500."
Take the money and run.

Agreed, unless the sale includes some intellectual property.. you'll be lucky to get a few hundred for a 3 letter domain name that doesn't stand for anything.
OOP does stand for Object Oriented Programming... so it is possible you could find the just right buyer that is looking for a name in that space.... but still 55k is pretty much crack smoking appraisal.
Afternic is probably the most appropriate place to list it.

poop.com. Now THAT would be worth something.

In days of yore, oop was object-oriented-programming, and was touted as the best thing since sliced bread. Many believe it is now toast.

It also means "out of print".
