Word For The Day, Thursday, September 16, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

obviate \OB-vee-ayt\, verb:
obviates, obviating, obviated; transitive verb
obviation, obviator; noun

1. To prevent by interception
2. To anticipate and dispose of or make unnecessary

It is reasonable to assume that Martin acquired the most basic skills of the rural gentleman: horse-riding, elementary sword-play and the minor degree of literacy that compulsory attendance at divine service encouraged were all requirements that preceded -- even obviated -- the need for a more formal education. --James McDermott, Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer

Etymology: Latin obviare, "to meet or encounter," from ob viam, "placed or coming in the way" (ob, "in front of"; via, "way").

How many million dollars in stock has Viacom lost since Monday?

Has Viacom gone down enough to screw other stocks on the DOW?

(Directly, I know each stock is separate, but a lot of things are done by total average, regadless of what each company is doing.)

Do you (or xshub) know if Viacom shareholders could sue Rather?

Just started raining hard here, NW of Atlanta. Winds moderate, but increasing from the east, as you would of course expect.

It seems that a town in Pennsylvania was extremely astute in obviating a Kerry campaign appearance by Fat Teddy!!!

Ted Kennedy's scheduled campaign trail speech cancelled in PA

Just when you think the Kerry campaign can't stoop any lower - they turn around and do something even more stoooooooopid.

Scheduling the fat old drunk for a speech in Mary Jo Copecne's (sp?) hometown.

And this man wants to be President. If this is the caliber of intelligence he has on his campaign, an Administration would be an even worse nightmare than we could ever possible imagine.

A superfluity of vocational obligations obviates pursuance of homework for the nonce. See you.

I lied.

Obviating the cliche that things never change is this cartoon from 1984:

I've been watching the weather channel. Mad Ivan it was. And yet there's another one outside of Ivan, Jean, I think that can possibly wreak some more havoc on Florida.

And I have the audacity to complain about the heat. Shame on me.

As I understand it Blather was just blathering. He did it live. Now, if he sold a bunch of stock in the days before, he could be checked out by the SEC to see if he WANTED Viacom's stock to go down from his rant. Otherwise, just another reporter hits the dust and takes down some markets with his idiocy.

Nice job digging that up Argh.

Can you find the Bloom County from 1988 where Rather says something like this "Bush is a weenie. Courage"
