Still nothing from Ksen huh?? I heard the storm missed Melbourne though. That is where the Entmoot Castle is at right? Praying that he and family are well, and weathering this storm safely.
That isn't right. Melborne got hit pretty hard, and is still being hit hard now. Lots of footage of damage in town. And the city of Melbourne is on the mainland.... the Castle is out on the barrier islands, right on the ocean. Those are all evacuated I am sure, and we won't know until Ruthy can get up there with a camera ;~D
Current radar pic from Melbourne. At least the radar there is (apparently) actually functioning, which is cool.
Thanks Sam...
Yeesh. what a mess life is there.
Just went to Publix Supermarket to get a couple steaks.
Surprised to find them open, since we are still experiencing tropical storm conditions.
However they are, and doing a fair trade, though some of the shelves are empty or low (no paper plates, not much water, plenty of wine, though, which was being hit pretty hard).
Their large, expensive electric sign was blown out, but I didn't see much other property damage while I was out.
Next concern is Ivan.
This is kind of like playing goalie when the other team really gets in your face. If they keep shooting, they're going to score sooner or later. I believe they already got one on ksen and LCS.
Thanks both of ya. I thought I had seen that it was skipped by.
Yeah - These storms have fresh players coming in all the time.
I just saw a much more optimistic report from Melbourne (more optimistic than the last one) that reported damage was not as bad as they feared it was going to be. Which is all relative, because I saw quite a few people's lives that were definately a mess, but no known fatalities.
I know it would be a major expense on the part of the various utility companies, but it might be time for them to think about burying their transmission lines. Think of the amount of trouble it could save for everyone! Folks wouldn't have to be without power for days or WEEKS at a time, there wouldn't be the danger of electrocution of workers or the public, and businesses can start back up sooner. It's better for the economy all around!
The eye didn't come on shore in Melbourne; it hit south of there. Areas North and East of the eye of the hurricane always get pretty major damage, if the hurricane is of any size, because of the counterclockwise motion of the wind and water being pushed by the storm. The Castle wasn't too far above the water level, so I'm guessing that the entire downstairs was flooded. Most homes on the water are designed for that eventuality; the downstairs are 'breakaway' or are minimally decorated, just in case.
Heh...the question is "who's gonna pay for it?"
Ruthy seemed game to take a trip up there when things settle down.... just to show us what it looks like ;~D
I am surprised that the lines are predominantly above ground there. Course, above ground they are easy to see and access for repair.... but here in tall tree and limb country, many of ours are buried.... Looks nicer too.
I guess it's one of those infrastructure questions. Maybe folks will be willing to pay some extra over time if they can be shown that they would NOT lose power in the event of a hurrucane or even a big storm, which happens frequently. After these two events, and maybe Ivan following on Frances's heels, folks might be more amenable to the idea.
Heh. You know what price-gougers those utility companies are. I'm sure Halliburton and Cheney have something to do with it. /sarcasm
Good afternoon. :)
Well, it is more the right side than the north side.
Our mayor, Baby Face Pinellas, was just on radio, advising everyone to leave up their shutters for the time being, since major hurricane Ivan is due in the area by the weekend.
In case you guys didn't see it, here is a freeper report from Palm Bay:

You guys just can't get a break, can you? is this an unusual hurricane season?
No word from ksen, I guess...
Nothing like this has happened in recent history, but it has happened before.
I was talking to an old timer who mentioned that it had gotten his attention when Miami got hit twice in one year, back in the 40's. I should research that and see if his memory is OK.
Hey folks!
It's a soggy, yucky mess here in Miami! Blech!
I drove out to my grandmother's (they lost power) and the rain just doesn't quit. Stopped at the store to restock the paper plates, chips, etc and got caught in a downpour with the kids. :-/
*sigh* Got home, dried off and they've had their bath. I'm tired of hurricanes, tired of being cooped up and dreading Hurricane Ivan. I don't think Miami's luck will hold out for a third hit to Florida.
