Eleventh Thread: Wedding Edition: The Hobbit Hole XI - No One Admitted Except on Wedding Business!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |
One thing that sort of annoyed me about the ROTK movie (which I love) is that Shelob could sting with her tail, like a wasp. Could she do that in the book, btw?
We had banana spiders all over the yard here until 1992, when they were all blown away by hurricane Andrew. Just this summer, 12 years later, have they been able to reestablish themselves. I had to knock down a few webs to get some of my hurricane shutters up, since they were in the way.
Yeah, I'm thinking you're right. They do get messy.
Like I said, I don't mind them. We have an "atrium" door on the back. Sometimes they like to build right across the door frame and they're hard to see at night...
The brown ones we have are very tidy about their webs though...it's funny! They build them at night, will still be hanging there in the morning, but then bundle everything up and put it away after a while! I've sat in the yard early in the morning with Joshua and watched them (the ones that hand down from the trees.)
I do NOT go out under the trees at night. If the chickens are distressed about something, Steve has to tend to them...I will not walk face first into one of those spiders, no matter how friendly.
Once, Roy ate one...it had it's legs wrapped around Roy's beak like it wasn't gonna let go!
You know, I can't remember! I think not, though. I believe she did try to hurt them by squashing them...but not with a stinger in her tail.
Guess I gotta check!
Palindrome?
Here's the beast. Sorta a moot point, 'cause she's been squished...
Any thoughts.
Shelob!
Now that is funny.
Ok. Classes done, it's errand time. I have enough quarters to start my laundry - but not dry it. I have to get at least a card mailed to my mother. I need to go to the library. And I need to get everything done by five so I can have a series study night.
I am so dreadfully embarrassed.
I am ~trying~ to get caught up here!
Oh!!! That's exactly the ones on our eaves and in our trees! I believe they're called "Garden Orb Spiders" and they are very intertaining to watch! But they sure do poop! Pity you squashed it...

Scroll down, you'll see one similar to this one...
The link tells you about how they tidy up their webs in the morning...I thought they just wadded it up but apparently they eat it! This is what Joshua and I witnessed...quite fascinating!
If yer gonna work half the day yer gonna miss a lot of mini-dramas...
By the way, have the smokers tried to get you banned yet? I was reading that thread in some confusion earlier.
The link says the site isn't available right now. I'll try later.
But yeah, that's what it looks like.
Just took a quick glance at the book, and it is vague on that point. At one point, it says that Sam was "right under her, for the moment out of the reach of her sting and of her claws." That is about the only mention of her sting. The actual stinging of Frodo occurs "off-screen," so there is no clear description there either.
Try this...I had to go back to google to access it...
www.geocities.com/pchew_brisbane/Garden_sp.htm
nope...still won't let me there...says it'll be back in an hour...
heh...too many Hobbit Holers googling "spider?"
One of them wanted to, in all seriousness, but I am still here. ;~D
