The Hobbit Hole XV - Pass them by! Pass them by!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Pass them by! Pass them by!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Why does that not surprise me! LOL

Heh...one brother did his first composing on one of those brightly colored kids xylophones...you know, the kind that have a couple little levers that make it ding when you pull them by their tow strings?

He's the most musical of us all, probably. I can remember him driving people nuts wandering around the house hitting various things with a stick to see what sound he'd get...he was also the one that took everything apart...not to mention hiding fruit in his closet so he could see what happened. Ick! Luckily it was an orange, which just dried out rather than growing anything...

It's politics. I know that.

Ugh. We're re-orgging, too. It's what organizations do best!

Only the problem is that my team leader is technically competent. Therefore she is going to be shuffled off to a closet and an openly incompetent TL will replace her. The twit actually *brags* about not being able to do the work, she's called herself "unteachable". She doesn't even know the difference between our systems and the enemy's (she thought an M1 was Russian).

That and everyone knows that this is happening 1 Oct. Only management hasn't seen fit to tell us and they think we don't know. *sigh*

Blasted civilians. There are some days I'd *pay* to work for a green suiter. (I've said that before, haven't I??)

(I still haven't seen Office Space)

That's almost unAmerican.

At lunch I've got to walk down to Shockoe Bottom to "The Toymaker of Williamsburg" and look for a present for my nephew. He turns 4 on Saturday.

His mom (wife's sister) said "something musical" because he's shown an interest and she wants to encourage that. I'm sure she's thinking electronic (microphone, etc.).

We're thinking less gadgety, more musical.

Morning! It's chilly here!

I'm getting a really late start, so I have to rush out the door in about ten minutes. This evening both of the other female American grad students are coming over and we're brainstorming an assignment; plus we seem to be a team for one class project. It should work well, but I have to clean... and I'm cooking my famous chicken curry.

Oh, I'm glad you sort of talked yourself into NaNoWriMo. I'd be glad to help you try to come up with a plot, I know a few techniques...

We didn't necessarily reorganize. The deputy troll is retiring. So Rasputin assumed some of his responsibilities, including the ones I reported to the deputy for.

But...without saying too much...one way or the other this will all change in exactly 501 days.

Not that I'm counting.

Get him a recorder. Infinite hours of annoyance, no batteries.

I'm interested in hearing what this essay was that Jr and half his class missed. Somehow that raises little red flags... but if the teacher is contacting parents it doesn't sound like she's just clueless...

Whistles are cheap...

However, putting one into the hands of a four year old might be a bit...hard on the ears. How much does your wife like this sister?

Eep. I just checked the forecast. Today: "Rain/Snow Showers". Eep. And tomorrow, sunny and 64.

I don't think she's clueless at all. And half of the class DID turn it in. There's a lot of things in play. The school is on the block schedule so, most classes meet every other day...But, this one meets every day.

What I like is that she not only emailed all the parents. She called all the parents.

We can work with that.

Well, we're paying her to keep Luke in the afternoons after pre-school. So we have to keep the peace.

Then again, she's been nearly absentee with regard to Nana. Hasn't visited. Hasn't called. It's a long story. There are "issues."

Still, a little noise wouldn't be so bad.

Is this the kid that did the flowers in?

Hm...I'm voting for tin whistle. They should have those there, I'd think!

I was trying to explain my problem to my brother, but he just said "Why do you have to have a plot?" Heh...he'll do just fine...

But I dunno what I'll do! Maybe I can have all the kids write down a crazy idea and then pull one from a hat...or see if I can combine them somehow. Bizarre is good.

Another example of liberal tolerance, I guess.
I'm just as glad I missed those threads, I suppose.

Try this: once you've decided what sort of story to write, design a character. It doesn't have to be the main character at all, but once you have one, you can start asking questions.

Plots are about conflict, and the most basic way to find the conflict in your story is ask "Who gets hurt?" If your characters all sail through happily, it's probably not that thrilling a story. Figure out what you're going to take away from them - and then figure out what they do about it.

I gotta think of a character at least. I still haven't decided what genre to write, which will make a difference.

Probably psuedo fantasy, I guess.
