In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

acclivity \ah*kliv*itee\, noun:
acclivities; noun, plural
acclivitous; adjective

1. An upward slope
2. Ascending, ascent

It prompted the matron to say that she would walk a little way--as far as to the point where the acclivity from the valley began its first steep ascent to the outer world.
--Thomas Hardy, Tess of the d'Urbervilles - A Pure Woman

Etymology: Latin acclivites, from acclivis, uphill: ad-, ad- + clivus, slope; see klei- in Indo-European Roots.]

Exactly my feelings-he is certainly an adulterer and a rotter, but that isn't a crime punishable with jail time...

do you have those ridiculous E-HARMONY.COM commercials about these people meeting their soulmates? i was mimicking one to xshub going on and on about how he was the man of my dreams, and my reason for living yada yada.

We ALL know here that both of you were already married when you met me, and we are all too committed to the sanctity of marriage for either of you to leave your husbands for me.

A husband walks into Frederick's of Hollywood to purchase some sheer lingerie for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price, the more sheer, the higher the price. He opts for the most sheer item, pays the $500 and takes the lingerie home He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on and model it for him.

Upstairs, the wife thinks, "I have an idea. It's so sheer that it might as well be nothing. I won't put it on, do the modeling naked, return it tomorrow and keep the $500 refund for myself. So she appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose.

The husband says, "Good Lord! You'd think that for $500, they'd at least iron it!"

He never heard the shot.

Funeral services are pending.

My comment from that thread:

Many Democrats have suggested that an overhaul of the Kerry "message machine" is seriously overdue.

No matter how much you overhaul the "message machine" it won't help if (1) you don't have a message, or (2) what little message you have SUCKS!

I'm with you - I've been paying attention to what the pundits have been saying about the Kobe case this afternoon (I've been away from the computer a couple hours otherwise I would have commented earlier)

You were the first one I thought of when I first saw the thread before I went out, but I saw you had already replied to it, so I knew I didn't need to bring it to your attention!!!

Interesting turn of events, to say the least.

Sorry to have been so curt about it before, though I do think that was the more amusing answer.

In reality, this falls into the need for legal system reform which includes tort law reform. While it is inappropriate for Kobe, and the girl, to have had extramarital whatever, it should not be required that there be witnesses and legal documents signed to prove that it was consensual.

Common sense says that by going to his room, she was guilty of at least using poor judgment. Once it became known what the circumstances appeared to be, universal public judgment was not in her favor. One has to wonder why the legal system needed so much time and wasted resources to reach the same conclusion.

it's a bit more complicated than that, but basically it comes down to an inept prosecutor. there was no way, with any amount of research into this beforehand, that he should have taken this case with that woman as the presenting witness.

and for the record i think the rape shield law worked fine in this instance. her sexual history was not brought in to show that she was a slut and therefore couldn't be raped, but rather was confined to the 72 hour or so window, encompassing the before and after the alleged rape. The relevance of that would go to whether or not the injuries she claimed to have sustained were preexisting from a previous encounter, and whether going out and screwing someone a day or so after claiming to be raped, was within the bounds of normal behavior for a rape victim.

but it is beyond question that she set back the cause of rape victims with this case. false accusers always do the most damage.

Speaking of inept prosecutors, it would appear that Scott Peterson has been blessed by an abundance of stupidity in the enemies' camp.

I fear for the triumph of justice when supposedly good men go through the motions of doing their jobs.

I think I was just quoted!

Well, maybe not but my tagline used to read "John Kerry never saw a tax he wouldn't hike." Well, the Gov or Wisconsin, Paul Ryan, just said the same thing at the podium. I wonder if he's a lurker, or one of his staff?
