That 139 Kt is at FLIGHT LEVEL, not at sea level; that's still a solid 4, probably around 145 MPH or so, not quite a 5.
Wow! That thing is impressive! Scary, but impressive.
Right now I am looking at myself being in the eye of this storm on Sunday. I will place a small bet that the path moves north of the current prediction. I have a concrete block house and a walk in closet with no windows, but I don't want to face 150 mph winds.
I'm hoping it will follow a path up the coast without making landfall. That would still cause a lot of rain and flooding, but better water than wind and water both.
Sometimes the wind will lag slightly behind the pressure - if the pressure drops suddenly, it will take a couple of hours for the winds to strengthen in reaction to the pressure drop.
Something like 70% of the residential properties in Florida are already insured by a State Joint Underwriting Association.
Thanks. Can I also assume that a lower pressure is more dangerous, because it will cause a higher storm surge..which I believe causes the greateset damage and loss of life?.. If I wanted a link to a good basic primer on understanding hurricanes..you can judge my relative grasp ofknowledge by these two questions..what would you all recommend? Thanks again..
I was in the eye of a cat 3 back in 1983. It is like being in the wrath of God.
Possibly true, but liberals don't believe in God. The best we can hope is that the rich New Yorkers and Chicagoans panic, sell their homes and move elsewhere.
Right now as I type the UPS batteries ar getting a workout from a local thunderstorm. Thursday and Friday I do full system backups and make sure we have at least two off site copies.
I've been through a full system restore this summer for unrelated reasons. This time I think I know the drill.
Good luck and God Bless.
Looking at the visible satellite, I think Frances is feeling a slight effect from the northerly winds ver the central and northern Bahamas.

Looks like Frances is between the two in size - Floyd was hugh. But both went through very strong intensivication after they swung back westerward after a NW track.
Trof forming off of the GA/SC coast...
Latest news....Hurricane France now retreating. Hurricane lost its strength and gave up. Now a slight drizzle.
South Florida back in play...This is really getting ugly
