I agree. We love it and have it on DVD. It's perfect. They should try an original idea for a change.

He should do some other Roald Dahl story, like "James and the Giant Peach," or "The BFG."

those would make cool flicks.
I don't think anyone could act more mental than Wilder in
the flowing chocolate river scene.
The whole movie reminds me of Pink Floyd's ,The Wall.

There's the key: No one could do as memorable a job as Gene Wilder.

When I had heard a remake was being planned (maybe a year ago, before I heard about Burton), one name tossed about was Christopher Walken. He's creepy enough that he could keep you on edge as he did his song-and-dance... although I don't know if the remake was ever planned as a musical.

(Note: I've never actually read the original book -- I think the only Dahl that I've read rather than watched is "The BFG".)

"why remake a classic?"

Because hollywood ran out of original ideas years ago and basically has been running on fumes for decades.

The best rumor I have heard is Marilyn Manson.

If you wanted to make it dark, you couldn't get much creepier.

I give Burton's remake a big SCTV Count Floyd Scary.

He has changed the Oompa loompas song to he "International Hymn for all Workers of the World".

To be fair: Burton _did_ do a (technically) great job in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" using George Pal's 'replacement animation' technique (do a Google for George Pal and Puppetoons); though it was a bit macabre.

Mr. Pal's material is classic animation and Burton _is_ competent enough to do a _really_ decent animation-job with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (the book's title) as long as he maintains the same lightness and design as the 'Willy Wonka" movie.

Awww, great: now they're gonna have some no-talent piss all over Mr. Pal's 'War of the Worlds' too. Damnit!

I hope he gets WIlder to play one of the gramps.

Or better still, let him play a spry and ageless Willy.

Jim Carrey would have been a good call, before he got too big. Who should play the next Willy? Matthew Broderick? (Nathan Lane?)
