When I had heard a remake was being planned (maybe a year ago, before I heard about Burton), one name tossed about was Christopher Walken. He's creepy enough that he could keep you on edge as he did his song-and-dance... although I don't know if the remake was ever planned as a musical.

(Note: I've never actually read the original book -- I think the only Dahl that I've read rather than watched is "The BFG".)
