Did the Classic Horror Flick Haunt More Than Just the Audience?
When The Exorcist was released late in 1973, it sparked a visceral reaction from the public--literally. There were reports of people vomiting from the fright of a story about a young girl possessed by a demon.
The movie went on to become a massive hit, but few of those who flocked to the film knew about its grueling, nearly yearlong shoot or the tragedies that befell some of the cast and crew. Misfortune also followed the movie's sequels, leading some to wonder: Was there a curse on The Exorcist?
As its prequel, Exorcist: The Beginning, makes its way to theaters, E! delves into the mystery with a new E! True Hollywood Story, premiering Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. We go behind the scenes of the controversial film and reveal just why some believe the movie was cursed.
Whether you buy into curses or not, one thing is indisputable: The filming of The Exorcist was tough on all concerned. From a director who liked to startle his cast to a 12-year-old actress spouting some truly disturbing dialogue to the infamous "pea soup" scene, few escaped the production unscathed.
Subsequent Exorcist films had their share of bad luck as well--although many critics believe that's a result of questionable filmmaking more than any curse. Still, the mystery surrounding the films remains.
Think you can turn heads with your Exorcist knowledge? Then take our devilishly designed quiz, and watch the the Story to find out more about The Exorcist.
Well, I'll stay for the next show.Really that made me laugh so hard!
I thought I was the only one you had pretend-insulting-yet-actually-provocative conversations with. *sniffle* :(
The memory is the first thing to go. I forget the rest. ;^)
The story was based on a true story about a boy in one of the eastern states - New Jersey or Maryland or Delaware, I think. When the movie was re-released a couple of years ago, there was a show about the original story on one of the cable stations. One of the original priests involved in the exorcism was on it.
Really? Which base?
I agree. It is the scariest movie ever, I rented it a few months back, still sent chills down my spine.
But another one that's pretty close was "The Entity", another movie thats supposedely based on a true story.
Father O'Malley was my dorm chaplin at Fordham University. Great guy.
Beelzebub, one name for the devil, translates as "the lord of the flies".
Yes I do remember Turn on the Water Mary Worth... that was pretty scarry....
Darn! When I came home from watching that movie in 1974 I slept with my light on and the door of my room was wide open and I had to have my closet door open and the window shade closed smoething eeie about the wind blowing the tree agaisnt your window....My Mom and Dad said "I told you not to see that movie"
That's right Lord of the flis was a creepy movie read the book...
All she said was that she was OK now, I'm all right now, everything is good here.
Rather than spook me, I felt comfort.
For some reason, he was called The Green Man.
The accident happened to the boy in the late 40's or early 50's.
That story spooked us youngsters; apparently though, it was a true story.
In The Exorcist, not only was there a Ouija board, but the girl's mother's assistant also had these beads used for chanting. The Buddist chant was "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo"). The girl also spoke to an object (a bird) she fashioned out of clay. Spooky stuff.
Did your dorm chaplin believe in devils, or spirits, or ghosts?
My daughter had a very bizarre experience today, and it's not the first time. I am having a hard time dealing with this in a rational sense. I thought maybe this thread was a good place to ask for some input.
Very much so, at least on the issue of demonic possession, although he conceded that many cases had more to do with mental illness than actual possession.
Well, I don't think that my daughter is either possessed or mentally ill, but something is definitely going on. She has dreams about future events, that come true, and she thinks that she has seen dead people. The latest thing is really weird. She has been having this dream about people in an attic for over a year. She came and told me a few months ago that she dreamed that someone came and emptied out the attic and let the people out, so she was relieved that she wouldn't be having the dream anymore. Then today, she goes to work where she is a nanny, in a new home that the family moved to a few weeks ago, and as she is lying on the sofa, half asleep, a little girl screamed and ran across the room. She said she didn't know if she was awake or asleep, but she was definitely awake afterward. Then about a half hour later she goes upstairs to see if the child she babysits for was awake and opens a door to see what is behind it, and there is the attic from her dreams.
The old library at Fordham (where I went to school) was haunted. Over the years, several student SWEAR to have seen the ghost of an old Jesuit, with one girl claiming he helped her with research!
My daughter is so upset that she is begging me to find someone for her to talk to, and I don't know where to turn.
