The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm sure that by the time Jr has his own children, he will have reached that point in his life where he realizes and appreciates the sacrifices you made.

You're a terrific dad, Corin. It's inevitable that Jr will recognize how lucky he is to have you and the Mrs as parents.

Yeah, there are a lot of options. This will allow him to take the percussion lessons. And I'd really like to see about getting him involved some in some sort of video production class/project.

But he resents stuff like that coming from Dad. So we'll see.

Thanks Ruthy. Wife talked that thru with Jr. recently. He did not know that my dad was an alcoholic. She s'plained to him that I work very hard at not being like my dad.

Not just the alcohol. My dad was never abusive towards us, but he was just never ~there~.

Jr. and I have taken several trips together. We do stuff together (less now that he wants to be with his friends, but that's okay).

I never did anything I didn't have to with my dad. He never asked. Suffice it to say that I have a lot of scars from all of that, some that still linger.

But I determined long ago that I will NOT leave my boys with that legacy.

It's really hard to do a good job as a dad! Jr is blessed to have you as an example for him, even if he doesn't know that yet.

My pastor told me that when I look for a husband, to keep in mind what sort of father he'd be. I have a great father for an example. With the way you're raising Jr, I bet he's going to make some girl a wonderful husband someday.

Do you think his mom could suggest the video class? Would he take it better from her? Or maybe bribe a friend to bring it up.

Yeah, I think we need to find the class.

You know we've already tried to steer him toward our Alma Mater, which has an excellent communications department. Since 1984, they've sent interns to the Olympics and were THE training site for interns for Atlanta.

There are 40 students in Greece now, hired by the Greek Olympic Committee. They are the ONLY paid interns there.

He's said for a long time that he's interested in video production. We got him the camera, took him to meet with the director of the program at our school (he's a friend of mine). But he hasn't really applied himself.

That's the underlying problem in all of this. He WANTS to do things. He has dreams.

But somehow, he just can't grasp the concept that he's got to work for them.

How do you motivate someone else?

You don't. There's just no way to do it. But I think the class might spark something, turn a sort of "yeah, I'm interested in that" attitude into a passion. Particularly if some of the other students are enthusiastic. That sort of thing rubs off.

See you later Corin.... No easy way to explain to a kid to the point where they'll embrace that most of life is working in anticipation of something else down the road. They may logically understand it, but it's hard to live it. Heck, I am not good at working hard for delayed gratification myself. The future effect of any given day's efforts are sometimes hard to see as real. There's always tomorrow.

See ya later this afternoon, gotta go.

And you won't, Corin. I have no doubt of it. And, in turn, you will see your grandchildren reap the rewards of your efforts today.

Administration (at the time) nixed it because of how Tevye talked to God (it was a vey conservative Christian college).

LOL! Mama told me a story that when her Daddy was diagnosed with stomach cancer, HIS mother went into his room, shut the door, and my Grandmother heard this conversation from outside the door. "Jesus, you sit there, Mary, you sit there. Now I'm gonna tell you something. George is a good boy, and he needs to live. He's got little babies he needs to raise. If you want to take somebody, you take me! I don't want to bury my boy, so you take me before you take him!" Imagine all this said in heavily accented English; she was Italian. My saintly Irish grandmother was horrified that her mother in law would speak to Jesus in this way! LOL.

But the old lady died six months later, and my Grandaddy lived several more years, until his youngest child was in his teens.
Prayer comes in many forms, and God listens to ALL of them!

You're just gonna have to get yourself a small bottle of whiskey to have on hand; for medicinal purposes, you know. ;o)

You ever heard of that tune "Classical Gas"? That is my theme song! I mean, that song is running in the background of my life.

Sounds like that oughta be a dwarf song! ;o)

I truly believe that Jesus had a terrific sense of humor

Mel Gibson thought so too, that's why he put that scene in "The Passion of the Christ" with Jesus and Mary when he was a young adult and splashed her with some water she'd brought to him to wash up. It was a cute scene, but wrenching, since it was her memory during one of the awful scenes.

For his first miraculous act, they sent him on a beer run.

And it was his MAMA what done it!

You folks with firearms are obviously going to have to DRIVE to Shoot Moot! I don't think you want to be packing those pieces in your suitcases!

We've been down that road before, but I think he's paying attention now.

Yeah, a 2 x 4 upside the head tends to do that!

Now that was the Mother of All Funkles!

Urgh, my stomach's a little upset. And I'm wondering how I'm going to find time in my 15 minutes between classes today to run across campus, use the bathroom, and refill my waterbottle (that's important. It's so dry here, I have to hydrate continuously. Everyone carries a waterbottle around.)
