Word For The Day, Monday, August 2, 2004
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 08/02/2004 | The Reluctant Substitute

Posted on 08/02/2004 8:52:03 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cajole \kuh-JOAL\ verb
1. to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance; coax *
2. to deceive with soothing words or false promises

Example sentence:
Peter's friends cajoled him into coming to the party even though he was not in the mood to go.

Etymology: Did you know?
You might not think to associate "cajole" with "cage," but it's likely that these two words are connected. Researchers have made an association between the prattle of a caged bird and the persistent wheedling of a person attempting to get something out of someone else. "Cajole" comes from a French verb, "cajoler," which now means "coax" but at one time meant "to chatter like a jay." Some etymologists theorize that "cajoler" is from "gaiole," an Old North French word meaning "birdcage" and ancestor to our word "jail." "Gaiole" derives from a Late Latin word, "caveola," which means "little cage" and is the diminutive of the Latin "cavea" ("cage" or "cavity"). Our word "cage" derives from this noun, and "cave" is a close relative.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Hell, I'm not eating it and I'm cooking it! I don't know why, but I've hated sauerkraut for as long as I can remember...

For years sauerkraut was the ONLY way I would even dream of eating cabbage.

Maybe we should just make up our own definition. We can do it, too. Heck, we're the freaking WFTD!!!
I'll get us started.
Beeber(noun) pronounced bee'bir : 1. A small African bird whose call sounds like this - BEE-bir, BEE-bir.

Someone else fill in the rest of the parts of speech and definitions.

I like that-I think I can elaborate on it-

Beeber(verb) pronounced bee'bir: 2. To make or imitate the call of the African Beeber bird.

Beeber (noun) derogatory term used to describe a small, hyperactive person thought to be of small intelligence (bird brained).

Next?

Works for me!!!!!!

I'm sitting here staring and the sheets of rain coming down outside the window knowing I have a 25 miles drive to take Jax to soccer and don't know if I should even attempt it.........radar doesn't look to promising either.

Oh, joy-I'd be tempted to sit it out, too-I hate to drive in the rain. I've got a bid to do west of SA, and since it is within 12 miles of so of Lackland, I may as well do the PX and commissary run-but at least the weather is mostly clear.

The post office is resending today. As I wasn't home for it. So I signed for them to drop it off at the door.

And guess what my alma mater isn't ever getting a penny in contributions from me because they have gone lavender.

Unless one of the requirements of him speaking was that he wore the feathered cap and the cape of a 4th-Degree Knight. It takes a special brand of drunken Polack to pull that look off correctly; I'm sure Kerry would just look like some pirate's boyfriend ready for a night on the town.

holy cow, not like i insured it or anything!

well as xshub says about SU's alumni mag, every page has either a minority, a woman or a fruit pictured on it. Just make sure when they call and ask for cash that you tell them why. SU has stopped calling our house, bc xshub would wax eloquent to those poor suckers placing the call....
