Word For The Day, Monday, August 2, 2004
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 08/02/2004 | The Reluctant Substitute

Posted on 08/02/2004 8:52:03 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cajole \kuh-JOAL\ verb
1. to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance; coax *
2. to deceive with soothing words or false promises

Example sentence:
Peter's friends cajoled him into coming to the party even though he was not in the mood to go.

Etymology: Did you know?
You might not think to associate "cajole" with "cage," but it's likely that these two words are connected. Researchers have made an association between the prattle of a caged bird and the persistent wheedling of a person attempting to get something out of someone else. "Cajole" comes from a French verb, "cajoler," which now means "coax" but at one time meant "to chatter like a jay." Some etymologists theorize that "cajoler" is from "gaiole," an Old North French word meaning "birdcage" and ancestor to our word "jail." "Gaiole" derives from a Late Latin word, "caveola," which means "little cage" and is the diminutive of the Latin "cavea" ("cage" or "cavity"). Our word "cage" derives from this noun, and "cave" is a close relative.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

I don't remember which thread - but for you I will repost!!!!!! This is the original recipe I found - but I have never stuck by it - in fact the last I made this I did it in a 5 quart stock pot. the original recipe was for a hot sidedish - it works equally well at room temperature or as a cold salad. I've even used it in place of sauerkraut on bratwurst. And it keeps forever in the fridge!!!!!

4 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon cumin seed
3-8 dried chilis - to taste
1 small onion, sliced
2 1/2 cups shredded cabbage
2 carrots, grated
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons lemonjuice

Melt butter in saucepan - saute cumin seed and chiles about 30 seconds. Add onions and saute about 2 minutes. Add cabbage and carrots, saute about 5 inutes or until cabbage is limp. Stir in lemon juice and salt.

Can you imagine?

A cool name like Zimmerman, and he changed it to Dylan.
That's almost as bad as changing to Bob Thomas.

Asian Cole Slaw recipe:

2 pkgs shredded cabbage
8 green onions
8 T. sliced almonds
8 T. sesame seeds
2 pkgs Ramen noodles
4 T. sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 cup salad oil
6 T. rice vinegar

Crush noodles, chop green onions. Toast almonds and sesame seeds until golden (350 degrees oven for 10-12 min-stir couple of times). Mix sugar, salt, pepper, oil & vinegar. Combine everything with the cabbage and mix well. Serve immediately - noodles will get soggy otherwise.

I can imagine a Zimmerman Flurry. That's a cool name, only I don't know if that would be a two-seater plane, or a twelve cylinder touring car.
