Thanks for the post. I had forgotten all about this coming out.
I've been wasting my playing time with CoD multi.

I broke down and bought a new computer this year. I found the HP with an AMD processor to be an excellent deal that went through setup easily and quickly. And best of all, it was only $750 after rebate of $75.

I cannot stand that this game requires such a powerful machine. I simply won't buy a new computer right now.

Okay, but only this once.

Like you, my business partner and I both loved the old Doom game.
I have always thought the real genius of id software was allowing the "cheat codes".
Any word on that aspect?
Thanks, and please add me to any ping list alongs these lines.

in the pre-WWW days, games like doom and descent were *the* killer aps that fostered PC sales (at least for home users like me).
i bought my first "modern era" PC from gateway, a pentium 120 just to play descent... (got ripped off by gateway in the process, but what i learned in the process made it worthwhile)

Sounds like my system. I guess that is why all my games are over 3 years old. LOL!!

I'm going to have to wait and see how my system performs with it. I've got an Athlon 1.33 Ghz with 1GB RAM, NVIDIA 5500 video card w/256MB. Running Linux, so it should run a little better than in Windows.

I swear I saw these guys at the FleetCenter last week.
(Microsoft Pinball Arcade and FreeSpace are about as high-tech as the games get around here)

I need a new computer.
My ancient system features a 5 gig HD, Windows 98, 64 megs of RAM, a Pentium II processor, DOS 6.0, a twisted and mangled modem port, and a DVD-ROM drive that hasn't worked since I punched it in about a year ago.
Good thing I never tire of Axis & Allies and Aces of the Deep... Too bad I didn't keep DOOM on my system before rendering it incapable of installing new games.

The long awaited game is finally here (well, almost here)...and guess what? My computer, my sister's computer, my brother's computer, and my dad's computer will NEVER run it. Yeah. :-(
All well, I could always wait for the Xbox version. But by then, I would probably be playing Halo 2. So many great games coming out, so little time.
At least I'm not waiting for Duke Nukem Forever! Hehehe.

I'm not sure what does it the highly detailed textures, the fancy colored light and shadow-play, the all-new physics models, the "normal mapping" (whatever that is) Normal mapping is a way to make a 1,000 polygon model look like it has 10,000 polygons. This is definitely the future.
