Some of you know the story of Zia, my new kitten. Well, Wednesday night I found myself in custody of another kitten - poor thing just strolled up to me in my carport, mewing piteously. I took it to the vet, and it turns out the poor critter has good reason to mew - it has feline leukemia and a nasty upper respiratory infection.
This kitty is in trouble - I can't take her becase Zia would be in danger of infection, and no normal shelter would take her for the same reason. I have a call in to Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission (the local no-kill animal shelter), but haven't heard from them so far. I'm currently boarding her at the vet. If I can't find a home for her by Monday, she'll be euthanized.
The respiratory infection is curable, and she could potentially live a long life. The problem is that she could not be in a house with other cats because of the feline leukemia, and in about seven years she'll probably start to develop other health problems. (So says the vet, I'm no expert.) I also expect she'd have to be an indoor cat because of the leukemia.
The kitten is female, about 6-8 weeks old (possibly a littermate of Zia's), brindled tan coat, and has no fear of dogs. I'll happily drive her to anywhere within a few hours of the Myrtle Beach area, but I doubt an air cargo company would take her without a clean bill of health (and she does have fleas). Sorry, no pics - maybe later.
I know this is a long shot. If anyone is interested in taking her, please post or freepmail.
Kitty ping!
Maybe kerry will volunteer to give the kitten CPR.
I can't help the kitty. But add me to your list. I have five.
Why encourage people to put the energy and compassion and resources into a cat instead of a abandonexd child who needs help?
Be kind and have the cat killed.
Our two kitties wouldn't hear of another arrival. I hope you find the little one a safe home.
Doesn't the kitten already have enough problems?
Keep it quaranteened until then. 10 days of antibiotics should clear it up. Im in Little Rock, else I would give you several names of vets who would help, and possible homes. Try to find someone that just lost a pet due to illness/age. A new kitten is a good medicine for them.
Good luck.
Well of course you can't help, you need help ;)
BUMP for the poor kitty....
Can't help, but I salute your effort.
That's not nice.
I had a cat who had feline leukemia, and we tried to keep him alive, with numerous trips to the vet. But, in the end, the disease just overwhelmed him. He had such a hard time. If I had another cat with the same diagnosis, then I would just have it put away immediately. Not being dismissive, but just realistic.
You are a very kind to have picked up the kitten and looked after it. At least the little creature is being fed and looked after. It is not out there frantically searching for a home. If it does have to be euthenised, this is not a cruel act - they pass away immediately without suffering.
It's not really a ping list so much as a bunch of people who asked to be updated on my kitten...well, maybe it is a ping list. You're on, in any case.
Saving kids who have no one to help them is much more important than saving cats who have no one to help them.
Priorities.
Where are yours?
There are plenty of single or elderly folks who could use the company of a pet. If the cat needs to be put down, okay. But, if someone in the area can take care of it, more power to them and the cat.
Compassion is a good thing - but focusing it on one another is where we ought to be.
"Animal Rescue" makes me ill - until all kids are rescued.
The vet already donated the checkup and lab tests. The kicker is the feline leukemia.
You gave me some ideas though - thanks. I'll make a few more calls.
Tell me about it!
Thanks. I dig dogs as well (Labs) but currently have no hunting buddy.
I'm for animal rescue programs because I have compassion for animals. Being pro-life doesn't only stop at human beings for me personally.
