Some of you know the story of Zia, my new kitten. Well, Wednesday night I found myself in custody of another kitten - poor thing just strolled up to me in my carport, mewing piteously. I took it to the vet, and it turns out the poor critter has good reason to mew - it has feline leukemia and a nasty upper respiratory infection.
This kitty is in trouble - I can't take her becase Zia would be in danger of infection, and no normal shelter would take her for the same reason. I have a call in to Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission (the local no-kill animal shelter), but haven't heard from them so far. I'm currently boarding her at the vet. If I can't find a home for her by Monday, she'll be euthanized.
The respiratory infection is curable, and she could potentially live a long life. The problem is that she could not be in a house with other cats because of the feline leukemia, and in about seven years she'll probably start to develop other health problems. (So says the vet, I'm no expert.) I also expect she'd have to be an indoor cat because of the leukemia.
The kitten is female, about 6-8 weeks old (possibly a littermate of Zia's), brindled tan coat, and has no fear of dogs. I'll happily drive her to anywhere within a few hours of the Myrtle Beach area, but I doubt an air cargo company would take her without a clean bill of health (and she does have fleas). Sorry, no pics - maybe later.
I know this is a long shot. If anyone is interested in taking her, please post or freepmail.
I sure hope the news you posted has come to pass... what's the latest on Aimee's adoption?
On Friday, Aimee's leukemia became acute. Her body temperature dropped to 88 F, she became dehydrated, couldn't walk, and lost interest in food. The folks at the vet's office didn't let her go, though - they injected fluids subcutaneously, put her on a heating pad, force-fed her, and cuddled and encouraged her at every opportunity. When I visited at 3:30 PM she had recovered a bit - her temperature was up to 91.7 F and she was walking, albeit very shakily.
It's too early to know if she'll pull through, but she has a fighting chance, and Aimee is nothing if not a fighter. One very encouraging sign: When I visited, despite her condition she climbed onto my shoulder, cuddled up against me and started purring, and stayed there until I had to leave.
I haven't heard anything on her condition since Friday - I'm going to check first thing in the morning. The adoption will go ahead as soon as she recovers. I'll definitely ping the Kitty Ping List when I know more.
Just talked to the vet's office; Aimee is back on her feet - playing, eating, and pretty much back to normal. The vet wants to wait a couple of days before she goes to her new family, just in case she relapses, but she's out of the woods.
Whew!

Good news. Glad she has found a family.
Good news! You've been a Godsend for little Aimee.
Oh good Lord, I had no idea she'd had such a close call. Many thanks to you for all the good work you've been doing for this sweetie, prayers sent!
I'm going to miss Aimee - like everyone else who met her, I fell in love with her. She was just as much a snugglebunny when I picked her up at the vet's as when I dropped her off so long ago, and by now all the folks at the vet's office love her too. It breaks my heart to lose her, but I'm glad she'll be going to a wonderful home.
Aimee's new family have promised me pics; I'll post them as soon as I get them.

See previous post; looks like your prayers came true.
It's great to hear that Amiee has a good home! :-)
God bless you for what you've done for little Aimee.
Thank you for the update, this is truly wonderful news!
You're welcome, and I thought so too.
Aimee went to her new home on Saturday, and is doing just fine. I received this e-mail from her new family:
She is doing absolutely wonderfully! My other cat, JT, has reacted so great to her! He walked up, sniffed her, then pinned her down and gave her a bath! They started playing right away, and I couldn't be happier. She hates to take her meds! But she takes them, and she is not wheezing or feeling down...eating like a horse, and playing like a healthy kitten...I'm still sorry I couldn't take her myself, but I think this counts as a happy ending.Thank you again for letting us adopt her!

What good news! Thanks for the update.
You're welcome. I'd like to say I learned something from the experience, but if another kitten shows up in my carport I'll probably do the same thing. :-)
It's not a sin to be kind hearted. We have two cats that were rescued kittens. They've been really good buddies to us.
Fantastic news...JFK
That's a nice story. I'm glad you found a family for Aimee. Poor thing. You took good care of her.
Good work!
Congratulations on making a happy ending to little Aimee's story!
