Denzel vs. Meryl on Jesus & Bush

"Manchurian Candidate" stars Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep may be promoting a movie together, but they are not of one mind when it comes to religion and politics, as a recent interview on NBC's "Dateline" revealed.

Katie Couric asked Streep about her appearance at a John Kerry fund-raiser, where she criticized President Bush by saying: "Through the shock and awe I wondered which of the megaton bombs Jesus, our president's personal savior, would have personally dropped on the sleeping families of Baghdad."

"It was a question about, when you put Jesus on the campaign bus to stump for you, you have to really listen to what he says," explained Streep. "Because he says, 'If a man smite thee on the cheek, let – you turn the other, that he may smite also.' And he says, 'He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword,' and he says, 'Love thine enemy.' Jesus could have raised an army against the people that persecuted Him. He didn't. So, that's what I was pointing out in my speech. And I couldn't really imagine Jesus – like, I couldn't imagine how Jesus would vote. Jesus was the Prince of Peace. Would the Prince of Peace vote for a war president?

But Washington didn't let that statement go unchallenged.

"Jesus also went into the temple and kicked everybody out," he interjected. "So some people..."

"That's kicking the money-changers out of the temple," said Streep. "So the money-changers should get out of Congress. I agree. And out of the church, and I agree."

"He didn't – He didn't only say 'turn the other cheek,' though," continued Washington. "You got to read the whole book. That's not all He said."

"Oh, I do read the book," said Streep. "I do, too, and that's not all He said," said Washington. "Like I said, he did go into the temple and cleared the place. Well...

"Of money," said Streep. "Money's bad."

"OK, well, we're all – we all make – make money," said Washington.

"Yes, thank God," said Streep.

"So does that make us bad?" asked Washington "Maybe He's talking about us.

"Well, yeah, maybe," said Streep.

Washington also went on to say he is concerned about the reception returning U.S. troops are getting at home.

"You know, I haven't seen "Fahrenheit 9/11" because I live in America," he said. "I grew up here. I'm an ex-slave. I'm a result of what this country can do. So it's nothing new to me. I'm not surprised at all. It's just business as usual. What I want to talk about is what are we doing right now today for these young kids that – that are coming home? ... Are they getting the support and the love they need from us? And maybe that story is being told, but I sure haven't seen that much in the news."

He suggested he'd like to see the national debate refocused.

"They're pointing fingers about who's right and who's wrong and who started what and where are the weapons of mass destruction?" he said. "But these kids are coming home. You know, I have a son, 19. Nineteen-year-olds are coming home completely different."

Some details of the interview have been posted previously, but this account seems to have more detail than the others. Glad to see Denzel hold his own against this hag.

Streep needs to read Luke 22:36-38. While Jesus said to turn the other cheek and all that, He didn't mean for us to be doormats.

As to the movie, I'm interested in seeing this remake as the original was very creepy, especially the part played my Angela Lansbury.

I have read that the original theme of North Korean brainwashing has been replaced by evil capitalists. Why else would the hag have a role in it?

Libs are hypocrites. They complain about the President "putting Jesus on the campaign", but turn around and quote the bible and Jesus when they feel it suits their purposes.

I'm an ex-slave

Then I must be a former inmate of a nazi concentration camp. And I was one of the jewish slaves that built the Pyramids in Egypt.

Denzel's an ex slave?

There has been a big discussion on a couple of threads as to exactly what he meant by that remark.

It was the opinion of several that he was saying he was no longer on the plantation, that he had seen and benefited from the opportunity that America offers.

I have hardly met a Christian who knows what Jesus was saying. When a man hits you on the right cheek, he is hitting you with his left ("weak") hand. This is an insult. Do not return an insult for an insult. Turn the other cheek. See if he hits you with his right ("strong") hand. Remember, Jesus was expounding on the law of retribution, an eye for an eye and all that. Jesus was saying this law of retribution doesn't apply to insults. In my army days, we put it this way, don't get into a pissing contest. Oh course, Jesus put the same idea a bit better. Children put the idea this way, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. When he was about to be taken in the Garden, he said if he wanted he would call down an army of 10,000 angels, but he had come to be offered up. Well, he was offered up, and now it's time for the 10,000 angels to kick some butt!

That is one of the strangest things I have ever read.

I think you are WAY off base.

Addendum to the interview from an e-mail I received:

Did you see the Denzel Washington interview with Katie Couric on NBC last Friday morning? Not many people are talking about it. They are wishing it would go away and are trying to sweep it under the rug.

But it's not going to happen! :-)

It basically went like this.

Meryl Streep and Denzel were on the today show "live" with Katie Couric to talk about the movie "Manchurian Candidate." At one point Katie asked Denzel, "have you seen Fahrenheit 9/11?" To which Denzel replied, "No, and I have no intentions on seeing it." Katie and Meryl were "so noticeably" taken
aback! It was so cool! :-)

Then, a discourse (or more preferably, a fight!) began between all three of them with Denzel being barraged with all kinds of anti-Bush, anti-Republican comments, but "the man stood his ground" and soon enraged the women so much
that they couldn't get a word in edgewise. Meryl Streep turned blood red and she sat with her legs crossed and her one leg shaking up and down fuming!

Then Katie uttered the words that put the final nail in her coffin, she said to Denzel "you see, that's the problem I have with 'you people'." She of course did not get to finish her sentence because Denzel pounced on her verbally by responding "YOU PEOPLE! YOU PEOPLE! Just what do you mean You
People! Do you mean 'You People' as in me as a Christian, or do you mean 'You People' as in me as a REPUBLICAN?" She then tap danced her way through the next minute of the show. But Denzel went out fighting and declaring that Fahrenheit 9/11 is nothing but propaganda and lies distorted to support a
Democratic cynical film directors views.

Whoo hoo!! I love this man! :-) There's a celebrity that deserves to wear the uniform in movies and I don't mind at all.

All I've got to say is way to go Denzel!!!

"Of money," said Streep. "Money's bad."

"Let me give you a tip on a clue to men's characters: the man who damns money has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it.

"Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another - their only substitute, if they abandon money, is the muzzle of a gun."

That's the embellished version. The real version, while still unusual for Hollywood, is less confrontational and less specific.

.....except that Snopes has been known to be a tad left of center. Is there a full transcript available somewhere? The article by Couric that is referenced by Snopes is by no means the complete transcript and is also authored by Couric so that significantly decreases it's believability, IMHO.

A tad, but only a tad. I don't know that they stand to gain much by risking their credibility by completely misrepresenting something so volatile. All things being equal, I'd still trust Snopes over any email from "a friend of a friend of a friend..."

That being said, if you come across a valid source that documents a "crisper" interview, I'm all for reading it. Nobody would like the snazzier account to be true more than I.
