Football team struck by lightning at practice
GRAPELAND, Texas Lightning struck a high school football team that was finishing up practice, leaving at least one player badly injured and others hospitalized.
About 40 players and coaches with the Grapeland High School football team in East Texas were injured when the strike occurred Tuesday evening, authorities said.
"One witness said they saw a flash, heard a boom, looked up and saw football players scattered on the ground," Police Chief Roger Dickey told the Tyler Morning Telegraph. "It is a sad day here in Grapeland."
The player struck by lightning was flown to the burn unit at Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston, where he was admitted in critical condition, officials said. The condition of another player, who was flown to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, was described as fair Wednesday, hospital spokeswoman Rebecca Berkley said. He was expected to go home Wednesday.
About 30 other players were treated at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett, including 12 who were kept overnight in good condition, Berkley said. Most were expected to be sent home Wednesday.
"It was just a freak thing," Superintendent Buddy Sumrall told The Associated Press. "It started raining, and they were getting ready to go in. They hadn't even seen any lightning, and one bolt hit the field."
Assistant football coach Jerry Richards said about 40 players were running sprints in a group when the bolt struck one player in the middle of the pack and others hit the ground.
"It staggered everybody," he said. "The force of it either knocked you down or knocked you backward several feet."
Good grief.
A lighting strike surely staggered my computer, and everything else digital, in our home yesterday afternoon...nothing toasted, just had to get everything reset.
Well we have to blame somebody :0)
WHIDBEY ISLAND - He's got all of the traits of a super hero; he's fearless, fast, and a master of disguise.
And Lucas Helland, 3, has already saved the day.
It happened when his mom used a chair as a step stool.
"I stepped off and when I did, I stepped wrong and snapped my ankle," explained Carla Helland. "I threw my head backwards and hit my head and I passed out."
Lucas picked up his mother's cell phone, scrolled through her saved phone numbers and started making calls.
The toddler left messages for his older sister, brother, and father. He can't read but he knows what their names look like. Within minutes his dad called home and got help.
KOMO 4 News asked Lucas "were you scared?" "Yes," the little boy answered.
But the story doesn't end there. Just five days later as Lucas and his little brother Logan, 2, played next to their dad's truck an electrical problem sparked a fire.
When their mom spotted the smoke coming from the truck she ran to help -- only to find Lucas already making the rescue.
"He, at that time, was still pulling out his brother who was kind of screaming ''Leave me alone! Leave me alone!' But he pulled him away from the truck," said Carla.
There's hardly anything left of the truck. But there is not a single mark on either boy.
Like most heroes, Lucas takes no credit.
"It got burned up," he said.
But saving two family members in five days makes his mother proud.
"I think he was put on this earth for something, and maybe this was it, I don't know," said Carla with a laugh.
Lucas just started pre-school and he already has quite a story to tell when it comes time to talk about what he did over the summer.
WOW .. What a great Kid
That sounds like a sceery double entendred question.....
It appears like you'll mostly get a lot of rain......anything to report?

I am reasonably certain that that little item is highly illegal in California. It has all of the evil characteristics - semi-auto, detachable magazine (and more than 10 rounds, at that), pistol grip. Peasants are not allowed to own such things.
Is he hugging a teddy bear? Well, who can blame him? It's probably more cuddly than Terrayyza.
