Eleventh Thread: Wedding Edition: The Hobbit Hole XI - No One Admitted Except on Wedding Business!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |
Consider it ordered. ;-)
I received an e-mail this morning!! I don't know how he ended up with my addy, but I'm glad he did!!
Here's some suggestions:
James H. Billington, Fire in the Minds of Men (traces the rise of Communism from the French Revolution)
Laurence Lafore, The Long Fuse: An Interpretation of the Origins of World War I
Bernadotte E. Schmitt and Harold C. Vedeler, The World in the Crucible: 1914-1919
Sally Marks, The Illusion of Peace: International Relations in Europe, 1918-1933
John Keegan's recommended reading list for World War II (to which I'd add, if you like military history: John Pimlott, The Historical Atlas of World War II, and Stephen Badsley (ed.), Atlas of World War II Battle Plans; Eric Larrabee, Commander in Chief, a great study of the Allied war plan; and anything by William B. Breuer who is one of my favorite historical writers on WWII and the Cold War)
Martin Walker, The Cold War
Post-Civil War America:
Frank W. Klingberg (ed.), A History of the United States: from 1865 to the Present
Walter Isaacson and Evan Thomas, The Wise Men (a biography/history of six key US foreign policy advisors from WWII to the Vietnam War)
John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr, Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America
Steven M. Gillon, Politics and Vision: The ADA and American Liberalism, 1947-1985 (traces the Democratic Party's internal conflict between radicals and moderates)
Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, Silent Coup: The Removal of a President (on Watergate)
Have you read the John Adams bio that came out a few years back? I really enjoyed that.
Hullo all. I have strep throat officially now. So I get medicine, yay!! And I came home. I'm in bed for the rest of the afternoon. Right now I'm making pretty labels for my cds...
That Joseph Plumb Martin stuff sounds interesting!
Most are the same...some are different...you have to get the "old" edition to go along with some of them. So I'm going to the used curriculum store here in Tulsa in just a few minutes...
But some of the videos go with a more updated edition of books...so you gotta do little research. I just now got it all figured out.
They tell ya..."This is the stuff you need for HomeSat...not the stuff in the regular in the BJ catalog".
I just figured out that the editions I had listed for Joshua's kindergarten are the new editions! They don't correspond with the videos!
Whew...I'm mentally wore out! I'm glad I got started on this early...it's taking me all summer to get ready!
Caught it before any harm was done...
Ecurb!! Can you fix this?? Maybe have some place where the servicemembers that go to the link have a place to check in??
I dunno...you're the expert...
Who was the John Adams bio by? I'd like to read that.
Sorry to hear you have strep--I'll pray for a quick recovery on that. I haven't had strep in a while--is that one of those illnesses where you still have enough energy to lay in bed and read/watch TV or is it one where you're so tired/lightheaded you don't feel like doing anything?
Heh...I'm not going to be gone that long...
But thanks for the list. I'll print it out and keep it for reference.
Haven't read the John Adams bio.
Now put down the label maker and get some sleep.
Thanks for posting that Ruthy! And thanks to Lance Corporal D.H.X. for a fine job :)
I'm just playing around on my computer. I'm propped up on two pillows, lights turned down, no noise. Pretty relaxing, and if I don't concentrate on something, my nausea will get me.
Might sleep in a bit, though. Or watch a movie.
"Heh...I'm not going to be gone that long..."
I figured after you finished reading the Bible you'd probably have some free time :)
It's the translating from Hebrew and Aramaic that's time consuming...
Yeah I know what you mean: the conversion from Hebrew to Dwarvish text can get pretty involved. At least it doesn't take as long as translating into Entish, though. . .
Clare wants to know if you need any more FMAs.
Thou Shalt Not Be Hasty
I'm thinkin' the Entish version of the Bible wouldn't be very portable...
Probably not something you'd wanna take on vacation.
OK, I'm off for a bit. Gonna get home, read for awhile, and make dinner.
Might as well...
Might as well...
