Eleventh Thread: Wedding Edition: The Hobbit Hole XI - No One Admitted Except on Wedding Business!
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |
I will. Plus, I don't have sick days - hourly worker - os if I don't work, at least half a day, I'll have a nasty shortfall in my paycheck just as I need to move.
If the other programmer doesn't come in, it will be a nice quiet day.
Yep, that's what I used. I've been lucky enough to catch sales, so it hasn't been bad at all price wise. And it's wonderful...sometimes if I'm really wanting an easy snack, I'll take a teaspoonful and just eat it very slowly. *drool*
Scary stuff about your water! Mine isn't the greatest (it kinda tastes moldy, I swear!), but at least it's safe...
We were spoiled growing up, though. They have a well with really good water. The downside is...when we've had droughts, the water dries up or is reduced to a trickle. Town water doesn't have that problem.
If you're not on a well you ought to make some noise to your water authority. Ask 'em what the heck you're paying for if they can't get the water clean.
Or at least find out why. An occasional "boil water advisory" is one thing, especially if you're either had a lot of rain or not enough. But I wouldn't sit still for notices like that over a long duration.
HOWEVER, you may also want to verify that they are official "notices" and not an advertisement for someone trying to sell you a water purification system. We gave in and let a company come do their "45-minute-presentation" (which turned out to be almost two hours). Then he was offended when we didn't sign on the line right there to buy a $5,000 water filter.
I called the number on the it gave...a woman at city hall saying they're working on the problem. Told me to come to one of the (I guess) city council meetings at city hall to hear more about it.
At the bottom of the letter it says "We at Bixby work around the clock to provide top quality water to every customer and we are currently testing the latest technology to help us meet that goal."
What are they trying to shovel on me? Or in to my water?
The contaminates where the water failed are:
HAA5 Halo-acetic Acid
TTHM Total trihalomethanes
Total organic carbon
Hmm... we need OT to explain what that means, I think!
I'd keep drinking bottled water.
Does Steve have any insider information?
Ugh. Sounds like the "90-minute" timeshare breakfast we attended.
2J- I agree with Corin. Make some noise and find out what is going on. Paying for bad water is absurd.
Probably new taxes for a new water filtration system. ;-)
If that's the word from city hall, I'd keep drinking the bottled water until you hear otherwise. Or consider getting one of those filters you add to the tap, or something like that.
You can get the filtered water at Walmart pretty cheaply.
The reality is you probably have to consume HUGH doses to worry about any of those things (kind of like having to feed five pounds of saccarin to a 2 lb. rat to give it cancer). But, it never hurts to be cautious.
But didja get the prize they promised?
He doesn't like it but I don't think he knows what to do about it either! And he's so rarely home!
But I do think we'll go to the next meeting...
It has even made the local news!! Months ago! And they still haven't fixed the problem.
That's wrong. They should take care of it. You'd think they could be sued or something.
That's what I figure about the hugh doses...but I don't want the jedis growing up on it.
I'm gonna look into getting one of those stand-up water dispensers...nothing fancy, just efficient. Just get my bottled water from walmart in the 5 gal bottles.
Our bath water looks like pond water.
Let me know what you find out. I'm half thinking of getting one of those, too.
And keep us informed! This is worrying...
It's the gubmint dumping Fluorine in the water again! :)
Series....halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine. They chlorinate the water some to kill the bad bugs but chlorine is toxic and you don't want too much of the stuff. From my environmental days, there's always some form of chloroform in the water: that's a carbon with 3 hydrogens and a chlorine stuck on it.
But then I've never worked at a water treatment plant. I expect they have ranges for these compounds that have been exceeded.
At least it ain't cryptosporidium. :)
I think I'm glad I didn't study chemistry...
Well I know what the stuff is and that I don't want to be drinking a lot of it, but I don't really know the ins and outs of a water treatment plant. But I'd rather deal with chlorine than with biohazards....at least chlorine doesn't replicate itself.
Yeah, and probably anyone who's been to a pool has swallowed more chlorine than you'd get in a year of drinking tap water.
That's why I don't go swimming anymore...they put too much chlorine in the pools. It's irritating!
Literally!
Heh...but I suppose it's probably better than a lot of the stuff in lake or pond water. On the other hand...maybe that's why I have a good immune system. I've developed an immunity to lotsa bugs, maybe? ;-)
Heh. Could be.
Hmmm....it's clouded up over here. Maybe I should roll up the windows.
