The Hobbit Hole XIII - Let them pass! Let them pass!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Posted on 07/13/2004 9:49:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Huh, I got Ft Collins as my third most appropriate. The others were all in Utah or, ironically enough, PA. Still, it's nice to know some piece of software approves of my life choices.

My top ten are actually mostly places I COULD see myself living...though I still think it's purtier here than most of these places.

Johnstown, PA
Lewiston, ME
Jamestown, NY
Seward, AK
Hancock-Houghton, MI (da UP!)
Ketchikan, AK (the name is kinda kewl, if nothing else...)
Camden, ME
Easton, PA
Windham, NY
Saranac Lake, NY

Mostly smallish Northeastern towns, though I didn't specify northeast.

And actually, the next town down from the top ten is Littleton, NH, which is one town over. SO I guess I ain't in too bad a spot already...

Okay, now this is a good example of the issue I was confused about the other day. Corin spammed five times in a row to get the Precious, so isn't that also a funkle? It seems to me that the line between spamming and funkling becomes very fuzzy at this point. . .

No, it doesn't. Funkle posts are unique. Spam is not.

Oooh - I got all done, but I don't want to register at the end and it isn't accepting fakes. I don't want the junk mail!

That was pure spam.

A funkle requires five successive posts responding to five different posts. IOW...

Funkle...substance

Spam...you don't want to know...

I just used my Yahoo address. I always use that for stuff that might give me junk.

If you don't have one, let me know and you can always use mine. It doesn't send ANY messages at all, so I don't mind.

Good definition. Besides, one knows spam when one sees it.

Yeah, Bilbo really needs to go somewhere with better transportation. But at this point he's committed to staying here for awhile. I kinda wish he'd go for it, but I'm not exactly the best example in that area...

Hmmm. Maybe he could be convinced to go if you and maybe one of your other siblings went along! That way, housing, etc. would be cheaper cause it would be shared.

The difference is that a funkle is a person posting real posts, substantive replies, where no one else is on the thread to break up the replies.... in the extreme, it looks like you are all alone and no one will talk to you.

Spam, whether unique posts or not, are garbage posts the are only seeking a silly post number.

"A funkle requires five successive posts responding to five different posts."

Now that they had to be to different posts I didn't know! Okay, I think I see what Rosie means by "unique" then. I tell ya, you learn something new every day around here. . .

My top 10...

Jacksonville, FL
Charleston, SC
Orlando, FL
Houston, TX
Phoenix, AZ
Chesapeake/Virginia Beach, VA
West Palm Beach, FL
Miami, FL
Norfolk, VA
Austin, TX

Richmond showed up at the end of the list. Austin surprised me, as did Memphis and Nashville.

Fortunately, Richmond showed up at the end of the list.

If I could pick though, I'd move to Williamsburg or Jamestown along the James River...I'd be right happy there...

Except...I have no desire to live somewhere big enough to have a lot of public transporation.

But maybe another sibling might, I dunno.
