Help! Viking Kitty Messed Up My Computer!

Posted on 06/28/2004 9:07:28 AM PDT by Not A Snowbird

Help, all you techies out there. Last night my cat sat on my keyboard (all 24 pounds of him). When I finally dislodged him, I discovered my screen display had rotated 90 degrees. I can't figure out what combination of keys he sat on to cause this, so I can't undo what he did.

Anybody out there know what to do? I'm working on a Dell with Windows XP. And please don't tell me to get a Mac, that would not be very helpful right now.

I know that there is some way to get into the setting, but xp is difficult to adjust to that level as it does most of this it'self.

I would find the last system restore point prior to kitty and do that before calling for tech help on this.

It is easy to do and works on everything that I have had go wrong with my Dell laptop.

Best way to get to system restore is to click help.

I can't find where anyone actually answered the question.

Keyboard "Hot keys" are turned on so when the cat sat on the keyboard the cat sat on the key "Control" and "Alternate" and one of the "arrow" keys at the same time.

To solve the problem simply hit "Control, Alternate, and one of the arrow keys". Keep rotating until you get it where you want it.

I always kep the hot keys turned off! LOL. They are a pain. I believe you just hod the shift key down. My kid messed up the family computer by screwing with the hot keys last year and it has been turned off since.

OOOPS, You have to press the shift key five times in rapid succession to turn the feature on.

My bad.

Have you tried dropping him on the keyboard again? It will either rotate back or rotate another 90 degrees. If it's the latter, drop him on it two more times and you'll be right as rain.

If all else fails, I just might do that.

I have a picture of Mt. Rainier for my desktop, and it's now lying on its side

Maybe it finally blew (have you looked out the window lately?).

Another way...

From reading the undo stuff, it sounds to me like this is one bright cat you've got there!

Look on the bright side - you could get him a job in tech support!

What video card do you have?

Right click on the desktop anywhere,
left click properties,
the window that opens will have tabs across the top,
left click the 'settings' tab,
on the lower right of the newly open screen, click the button that sez "advanced"
Adain, on this new screen will be 6 tabs. Click the tab that says the video card chipset (IE: Geforce4 MX440 or whatever)
An extendended window will open, scroll down to the word "rotation"
Click the word rotation.
Now correct the screen setting.

Try as hard as I can, I cannot get my screen to rotate.

Could be that it is part of your particular display driver package.

Hope you figure it out, cuz the monitor does not sit very good on it's side:-)
