Bush OKs $606 Million to Fund UN Standing Army

As if kissing every powder-blue hiney thats paraded in front of him isn't bad enough, now it seems (according to the June 28 issue of The New American) President Bush is pushing to spend $606 million (Defense Dept dollars) to help train a UN standing army. More of our tax dollars spent on UN social elite globalists. How lovely. My disenchantment with President Bush all started with his amnesty for illegals scheme and things seem to be going downhill. I wonder... is he trying to make me not vote for him??

One of the most stunning developments to come out of the Bush administration’s war on Iraq has been almost completely ignored by the media cartel. Incredibly, the Bush Defense and State Departments are jointly proposing to establish, with the apparent blessing of the White House, a 75,000-strong army of international "peacekeepers." Called the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), this astonishing scheme calls for recruiting and training primarily Third World peacekeepers, to the tune of over $600 million over the next five years.

How to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

Why is George W. Bush doing this? Especially in light of the ongoing U.N. Oil for Food Scandal?

Who oversees the activities of the U.N.? To whom does the U.N. answer? What redress do ordinary citizens have when they have been wronged by the U.N.?

The rights of citizens of the USA come from our creator. Government has no powers other than those granted to it by the people.

From where or whom does the United Nations derive it's powers?

The UN (and Bill Clinton) could use some training in refraining from sexual promiscuity, rape, prostitution, and starving 13-year-old mothers who refuse sex.

Interesting article. I don't see where this is any kind of "UN Standing Army". It is training foreign troops to act as peacekeepers instead of ours and focused on Africa

IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES

June 9, 2004
Mr. LUGAR introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations



A BILL
To authorize the transfer of funds for foreign countries to participate in international peacekeeping or peace enforcement operations , and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the `The Global Peacekeeping Operations Initiative Act of 2004'.

SEC. 2. FINDINGS.

Congress makes the following findings:

(1) The need for effective peacekeeping troops has grown worldwide, especially in Africa.

(2) Peacekeeping operations in Africa have grown from 24,000 peacekeepers in 2002 to 40,000 peacekeepers in 2004 and immediate future requirements in Sudan and Burundi will significantly increase the need for peacekeepers.

(3) Conflicts in Sierra Leone, Ethiopia/Eritrea, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Burundi, the Congo, and the Sudan have devastated the continent and set back economic and social progress for millions of Africans.

(4) African leaders, through the New Partnership for Africa's Development, have placed solving conflicts and managing post-conflict stabilization and reconstruction efforts on the continent as among their highest priorities.

(5) The African Union recently signed a protocol outlining its responsibility for peace and security on the continent and highlighting the importance of the organization's continuing partnership with the member states of the Group of Eight and the rest of the developed world.

(6) The member states of the Group of Eight have had a longstanding interest, expressed at both the Kananaskis and Evian summits, in providing technical and financial assistance to sustain and strengthen African peacekeeping capacity.

(7) The Group of Eight summit held in Sea Island, Georgia, in June 2004, resulted in the members of the Group of Eight pledging to train at least 75,000 international peacekeepers over the next several years and develop a plan to provide logistical support around the world.

(8) The United States has recognized the importance and value of professional training of international peacekeepers through several programs including the Africa Crisis Response Initiative and the African Contingency Operations and Training Assistance programs.

(9) The Global Peacekeeping Operations Initiative is a significant United States contribution to fulfilling the commitment of the Group of Eight and to supporting the aspirations of African leaders as such leaders pursue peace and prosperity on the continent.

SEC. 3. ASSISTANCE FOR FOREIGN COUNTRIES TO ENGAGE IN PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS .

(a) IN GENERAL- Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Secretary of Defense, with the concurrence of the Secretary of State, may transfer funds to the Secretary of State to provide assistance to military or security forces in a foreign country to enhance the capability of such country to participate in an international peacekeeping or peace enforcement operation.

(b) TYPES OF ASSISTANCE- Assistance provided under subsection (a) may be used to provide equipment, supplies, training, or funding.

(c) ADDITIONAL AUTHORITY- The authority to provide assistance under this section is in addition to any other authority to provide assistance to a foreign country or the military or security forces of such country.

Of what use would a UN standing army be?

Any time a UN official gets killed in a hot zone the UN pulls its troops out of harms way.

An army that is afraid to get shot at is not an army.

That's a most excellent question! That's the same question I asked of a publication by the same strange little constituency herd that posted the paragraph for this thread.

It's garbage. There are a cluster of people who are angry because our President won't bring back the Spectacle or something. It's likely that they're afraid of social programs being cut during his next term, which term is going to happen with or without them.

Look, lefties, if you don't want to re-elect our President, vote for Nader. Or go ahead and write in Milosovek, Hitler, or someone like that.

Mark, It was not obvious, that is why I asked. You referred to but did not link to the article in "New American".
Now I understand that your "source" is an obscure and little known publication that I could look up if I had sufficient motivation, and your confirmation is an unnamed campaign telemarketer. I suppose that is as good as a confirmation from a White House spokesman.

So then I guess forking over $606 million to the UN for their military development is OK with you? Since its not OK with me, that makes me a Kerry supporter? Your grasping. Personally, I have no intention of voting for Kerry (I would just as soon sit it out or vote Constitution Party before that ever happened).
