A sea lion found its way up the Petaluma River and crawled out into the parking lot of a motorcycle shop where a crowd gathered Thursday afternoon to watch.
The adult male sea lion had been spotted several times in Petaluma in the past week, authorities said.
By Thursday, it had reached the northern end of town, hauling out near the busy intersection of Petaluma Boulevard and Stony Point Road.
At about 3 p.m., it was spotted in the parking lot of Cycle West, a motorcycle shop on Petaluma Boulevard. It was headed toward the road when employees and passersby redirected it away from traffic as cars stopped on the road to watch.
The sea lion stopped to rest under some willow trees near the river and crews from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito were preparing to trap it.
Kerry Macleod, the manager of the motorcycle shop, said the sea lion bared its teeth and charged toward one person who got too close with a camera.
You could tell he was freaked out, Macleod said.
The sea lion apparently worked its way up the Petaluma River from San Francisco Bay. It was seen last week near the Petaluma Marina and Shollenberger Park, both of which are on the south edge of town.
It was subsequently spotted in the river near the outlet mall, a couple miles north of the marina.

Moby Ted-ROTFLMAO!
How this guy's ticker keeps on pumping is beyond me.
