"A mandolin is to a guitar as a piccolo is to a flute."
M/G=P/F? Let's see, that would mean MF=PG; M=PG/F; now solve for mandolin. . .The answer is. . .
42?

I don't really think so. She's rarely shown interest in anything like that. She did collect Precious Moments figurines for a while, but lost interest in that too.
I think spending time with my step-dad at the flea market and now at the store has given her a real aversion to anything that's just made to look at.
It's one of the reasons she's hard to buy for. Step-dad is even worse.

Something to do with "A Shortcut to Mushrooms", I'm guessing? :)

In a way, it does. :-)
The main thing holding me back is working out the child care situation. Ideally, I'd love to stay home while the hubby works. But I am sans hubby, therefore, I must work.
Therein lies the problem. With child care so expensive, it would be very difficult to make enough to pay for child care plus everything else. Add to that, I'd really rather wait until Alyson was a bit older before putting her somewhere. I want her to be able to tell me if something funky is going on, you know?

A mandolin is to a guitar as a piccolo is to a flute. Well...not really. Piccolo is more or less a very small version of a flute, no? Mandolin is a lot smaller than guitar, but not really in the same family, except that both have frets and strings. It's tuned the same as a violin.

I know nothing of The Shoes' whereabouts. I do not want them back...troublesome things that they are!
Some Dwarvish curse lays upon them.

Well, the cycle stops here. I have no desire to drive my kids insane or guilt-trip them into doing things for me.
And I ask everyone in here to slap me silly if I start doing it!!

You just gave me an image of that scene in "Airplane" where the line is forming to slap that woman :) Seriously, though, I'm sure the fact you're conscious of the issue will help stop the cycle. You don't strike me as the complaining type :)

Mandolin is descended from lute, right?

I believe so. And to an extent, so is the guitar...so I guess they have "ancestors" in common.
It SEEMS like mandolin would be the result of an illicit union between a guitar and a fiddle...
