Help! How do I move start menu from side to bottom? (vanity)

Sorry, but I need computer Windows XP help. The start menu got moved (thanks to the first day of school's out boredom, grrr) to the right side of the screen. Yes, I've tried looking everywhere under "help" but no luck. Yes, I've read the whole one page concerning the start menu in the manual. Yes, I have unchecked "lock start menu". Googling only suggests to click and move it to the bottom (duh) but it won't move and it seems others can't make theirs move either. Ok, it does move but only to enlarge it by moving it toward the left or middle of the screen. I can get the little arrow thingie on the left edge and move it all day but that's not getting it to the bottom because I can't get the arrow thingie to come on at the top or bottom of the bar. Can anyone help, please?

Thanks but that's what I've been doing for hours, whaaaaa. Ok, I left clicked in the gray area of the start menu, white arrow remained, held it down left mouse button while moving white arrow down to center-bottom of screen, and released mouse botton. Zip, zero, nada, and for the 3847th time the start menu remained on right side of screen. Short of pulling the plug, I still need help!

Right-click anywhere on the toolbar (except the start button), make sure the "lock the taskbar" is un-checked then left-click and drag it to the bottom of your desktop. Hope this helps.

Heck--it's pretty darn simple under Linux.

Works the same way under XP

Yes, I've checked and unchecked the lock, applied, and restarted several times.

My hubby says to get the little two arrow thingy and make the taskbar smaller(shorter). If it is too big, it will not drag to the top or bottom. And drag from the middle not the start button.

You're SUPPOSED to get the normal cursor inside the bar. Reread my post.

Speaking as a cyber-blonde...I've done that. Restarting undoes it. Restarting undoes almost all things. If restarting doesn't work, restoring works.

I haven't learned much, but one thing I've learned is, don't fiddle with the settings out of mere boredom. It has to be a real good reason, worth the trouble it's likely to cause.

I gave my XP to the kid and went back to Win98. Less hassle.

It sounds like a smart-assed answer, but it's not. My father tells me today, more than a year and a half later that it's the best advice he ever got about his computer.

First you must accept Bill Gates as your Anti-Christ. You will need the blood of a virgin, a live chicken, and a dog named Phydeaux (that's Cajun for Fido).

If all else fails (and it appears it had), go into system restore and find a date right before the little ones messed you up.

start, all programs, accessories, system, system restore.

I'm sorry I think I said that wrong. With the two arrow thingy make it as skinny as possible before trying to move it.

Minimize any open windows..... what should be left is the tool bar on the right.... Grab it and pull your arrow down to the bottom of the screen ..... release it.

In 2k, with the taskbar on the right side and stretched to half the screen in width (the max setting), it will still drag to the bottom just fine.

But if the kids stretched it before moving it, it will look thin on the right.
On my hubby's computer, when he expanded it at the bottom, then moved it, it would not move back to the bottom.

I made the task bar half-screen size and it still drags just fine, though it automatically shrinks some on the left and right sides.

Well, d@mn. Right-click should bring up a menu. :( Restart and try again. Good luck.

I hate it when that happens. Mine was stuck over there on the side for about a month, then one day I accidently got it to move. Don't remember how, though. I'm bookmarking this thread just in case it happnens again.
