The head writer and second host of the long-running, Peabody Award-winning Mystery Science Theater 3000 recently sat down for an interview with a fan website, and had some interesting things to say (as above). Though MST3K was rarely political, and fairly benign when it was, it Nelson cops to being a Republican and reading, among others, Mark Steyn.

Did my MSTie heart good to hear it, and I confess I kind of giggle at the shock this must bring to many of his left-leaning fans....tee-hee!

There were times when I had my doubts, but many quips and skits tended to lead me to the conclusion that Mike was to the right of the spectrum. It is good to know that my deductive reasoning arrived at the correct conclusion.

My late husband would have been so pleased to hear this.

Then again, on careful viewing of the episodes, he probably suspected these guys were on the right side :-)

Some will drop him now.

I'd recommend he go on Michael Medved's program as a guest rather than Bill O'Reilly's. I haven't listened to Medved in awhile (I have to listen online when I do). If nothing else, they could talk movies (both old and cheesy as well as new a preachy).

I liked Joel. He was much funnier. (more funny?)

Murphy and Chaplin are both hardcore lefties, though. I found that out from reading The Amazing Colossal Episode Guide.

I've known this for some time, and actually having found this out for myself I started downloading episodes of the show on my lap top. I now have a rediculous collection of over 60 episodes (not all MST3000, but 1 and 2 as well)...if you ever get the opportunity to see the episode entitles "The Family Dinner" or "Dinner With The Family" (cant quite remember) you will pee yourself it's so funny.

Not to ruin it (As if I could) they make fun of this old 50's style video that is supposedly showing proper etiquette at the dinner table between family members.

TOO FUNNY. HAHAHA. If any of you have AOL Instant Messager and want this video I can send it to you no problem. Just Freepmail me or reply to this post and we can go from there.

Corey

I was going to post this, but you beat me to it. I saw the interview, linked to it off of the MST3K site. When I saw that the blurb for the interview said Nelson discussed the current political climate, I thought oh jeez, another tirade about the president and the war. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. When I saw his comments about The Passion and about the dangers of radical secularism, I let out a cheer. I'm now a big Mike Nelson fan. Like everyone else I preferred Joel, but Mike had some very funny turns. Interestingly, during the Mike era they parodied a film called "The Starfighters," a cheesy, semi-documentary about Air Force Pilots that must've been commisioned by the Air Force. It's star was a young pilot who later went on to become a famous congressman from Orange County, California. You guessed it, it was none other than B-1 Bob Dornan. Anyway, it's a hilarious episode, particularly the "poopy suit" song. I wish they would release it on DVD. Incidentally, Frank Connif, who played Dr. Forrerster's dimwit henchman TV's Frank, recently signed on as a writer/performer for Air America, so I guess we know which way he leans. Too bad, he was funny.

This is way cool! I guess I'm one of the few that always liked Mike Nelson better than Joel.

I've always had the impression that Kevin Murphy was a Christian, even if he did lean to the left. Wishful thinking, perhaps?
