BUFFALO, N.Y. - Horrified motorists sprang from their cars Friday to stop a woman who was repeatedly slamming her 7-month-old daughter onto a concrete sidewalk, police said. The baby later died of massive head trauma.

Kirsten Vanderlinde, 36, who receives mental health care as an outpatient, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Melissa Vanderlinde-Berst.

Police had checked on Vanderlinde twice shortly before the attack. A neighbor said she had called a crisis intervention center two days earlier, after Vanderlinde, fearing she was a bad mother, asked her to take custody of the child.

Me:
"because it was posted at least a couple of times before this instance."

On the other hand, maybe not. Those were zapped over to chat, also. There's a third one up. We'll see if that one stays.

They were all moved to chat except one, from Fox News. At least a couple before the Fox News piece were also moved to chat (see comment with links to that effect in the Fox News piece posted at this site).

I just now found out that the "browse" link above takes us to the "chat" queue. To see the regular news list, go to

Part of what I think is Wrong Today is this incredibly strong beam of bummers that is focused on us every day. In any country with 300 million people, we're gonna get some number of nuts, and one or two of them are going to go off every single day, rain or shine. Lord knows what they are going to do... smash babies' heads, drown 5-year-olds, decapitate kids, set fire to puppies... it's just one damned thing after another.

If it weren't for the flush toilets, I'd almost rather go back to the 17th century, where you might hear about one of these, over in another village, once in your life. Instead we have "news media" now that make sure we know about every bummer from around the world, 24-by-7.

I could've gone my whole life without knowing about this. Wouldn't have hurt me a bit.

I hear you. A couple of kids in my neighborhood beat my son's friends cat to death the other day. Its a sick world.
On the other hand, If some woman offers me her baby because shes a bad mother, Im gonna think twice before I blow her off as being dramatic after reading this. And maybe it helps to know I'm not the only one horrified after reading this and all the other crap every day.

But the neighbor, Millicent Turrentine, said she never thought Vanderlinde would hurt Melissa. "She's never acted anything but loving to the baby," she said.

Witnesses said a woman wearing a nightgown and slippers was holding the baby by her ankles Friday morning and chanting: "Where's my TV? Where's my phone? Where's my peace? Where's my nice home? Where's my justice?"

"She was viciously swinging the baby and smashing the baby into the ground," police Capt. Mark Morgan said. "I don't even like saying it ... because it's so hard to think of."

A man ran to the woman and wrested the baby from her arms. Police arrived and tackled Vanderlinde.

Vanderlinde allegedly killed the baby just outside her apartment building, minutes after an officer checked on her at the request of another officer, who had driven her home after finding her walking with the baby shortly after 6 a.m.

Morgan said the two police officers who encountered Vanderlinde earlier in the morning had concluded the baby was not in danger.

"The baby was fine. The house was fine. The mother said 'I'm fine,'" he said. "Obviously, it is unusual for someone to be walking around with a baby at six o'clock but unfortunately it's not against the law."

On Wednesday, Vanderlinde asked Turrentine to take custody of Melissa. The late-night request prompted Turrentine to call a Crisis Services, a private, nonprofit crisis intervention center.

"I felt uneasy," said Turrentine. "I said `I think the mom is stressed out. I don't think she can hack it.'

"It broke my heart today," Turrentine said in her living room overlooking the sidewalk where the attack occurred. "I hate that I just didn't take the baby from her."

A spokeswoman for Crisis Services declined to comment, citing a policy of confidentiality. Kevin Helfer, commissioner of the county's social services agency, said his agency had not been contacted.

I've lost hope, and now survive on tenacity.
Ohh, and cynical humor.

I WAS RIGHT

there is another thread on this same topic- I said "let me guess- she was a mental patient with a lifeloong history of child abuse and neglect, and she had custody of her child anyway"

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MY LITTLE GIRLS (I am the father) AT THE HANDS OF JUDGE JOHN O'DONNELL- HE TOOK THEM AWAY FROM ME AND GAVE THEM TO THEIR DIGANOSED PSYCHOPATH MOTHER DESPITE 24 WITNESSES AGAINST HER (none against me), ONE DAUGHTER HOSPITALIZED *DURING* THE TRIAL FOR NEGLECT ON HER PART, AND THE COURTS OWN DOCTOR RECOMMENDING SHE NOT EVEN BE ALLOWED OVERNIGHT VISITATION (and folks this is just the tip of the iceburg)
