The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

A spooky 27 y/o . Wow!

I tried really hard to stay clean yesterday but...lol. Sarah Lee's left side looked good but oh, the right. Looked like she had been rolling in mud. After I curry brushed I still wasn't happy with her legs so I went over her with charcoal. That did it. Dust all over me. And tell me how her left feet pretty clean but the right packed like concrete.

Good:). I thought maybe you were thinking he was a better rider then you. I don't know if he is or not, never seen him ride.

Just wanted to tell you not to think that. Not to compare youreself to others. From the pictures you posted you looked fine on the horse. Good seat.

I think women tend to work harder at "proper" horsemanship then men, so progress slower as far as speed. It's a man thing:). Men tend, IMO of course, to be more whup and ride type riders and think that if you can't go fast your not really a rider. I'm NOT saying this about Eddie because I haven't seen him ride, but from my view of watching alot of men they look like $#!* on a horse, even tho they are going fast, elbows flapping, bouncing all over the horses poor back at the trot because they think posting is for sissy's, sawing away at the horses mouth, leaning too far forward and legs behind them, or to far back, hanging on to the horn or the back of the saddle to keep their butts in the saddle. They don't take the time to get good at horsmanship skills before thier yahooing:). It's like they're running before they can even walk. I've never understood why everyone thinks if you can't "run" your not a rider. There are more important things then speed.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you, you look like you're doing fine, I wouldn't be jealous of anyone:)

Thank but I don't compete with Eddie anymore. I just go my own pace and do my own thing:')

I feel so silly posting this but he's not the one I'm jealous of. Okie is still my horse too, dammit:')

Well take him back:). Tell Eddie to find his own horse. I know for years Mack tried to get me to share horses with the kids. What difference does it make he'd say, as long as you get to ride. Well it does make a difference. You have to like the horse you ride or you won't ride. If you like Okie better, then ride him. If Eddie doesn't like the mare, get your money back and keep looking. If you don't like that mare, you'll start finding every excuse in the book not to ride, and when you do it you won't enjoy it as much.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do. I'm just speaking from experience.

I rode Trash this morning for a little more then 2 hours. Came in and sat for awhile then went out on Rusty for a bout 1 hour. He is still saddled out there and I want to go work in the arena a bit, but darn 2 horses a day is hard on old bones:). My back hurts, and I think being outside is not helping the asthma any. REally windy and lots of dust blowing.

~sigh~ but I really need to if I'm going to get him in shape and going good on barrels. Consistency,,,most important.

I was just as surprised when I learned her age. The trainers small dogs were playing in the bushes. She didn't like that at all.

I think that's just genetic. :-) My dad thinks that I don't really know how to ride because I don't go tearing up the trails yee-haw'ing it.

Glad someone agrees with me about men:)

Just got in from working Rusty in the arena. Didn't take long. He did so good, there was no reason to drag it out. It's amazing what a difference the way I'm turning the barrels now makes. So much smoother and easier on horse and rider:)

Those old girls can be stubborn too. The school horse I used to ride built like a truck. My instructor used to tell me "kick her, kick her" If she was in one of her moods though she wasn't moving until she had too. I laugh caz she likes to stop in the middle of the road when we leave in our truck. You don't get by til she's ready for you to go unless you get out and move her. I'll have to get you a pic.

Which type of barrel racing do you like? I found 37 on line.

She sounds like quite the character. :-)
I've still laughing, because when Tammi went into her tizzy over the dogs in the bushes, my instructor was shouting "Hold on! Hold on!" I don't know why I think that it's funny, but I do.

I'm glad that everything went so well with Rusty. It's so darn rewarding when things like that happen. It's like you're one functioning unit.

No. I pulled up barrel racing patterns and there were 37 different types of races.

This graph is the way I do it. But you can go to the other side first if you want. 1 left turn 2 right.

What I adjusted on my turn is: see how the approach to the first barrel is at an angle, well the horses body position is still straight at the back of the barrel, he will only have to bend around for abut a 1/4 of the turn. That's what I have always done. But on the second barrel I WAS having the horses body postion straight, parallel with it, which meant he had to bend alllll the way around to make the turn, they can't do that when you go faster, but now I have found if I move the horse over just a bit, then just a ways out for the 2nd I can angle him into the turn so that his body portion is still straight at the back of the barrel and he only has to bend 1/4 of the way. Works like a charm.

Make sense?
