I have talked to our local stores about this. Now I'm going to hand this editiorial to my local store managers and tell them Lowes must be loving this.

This why I go to my local hometown hardware store! I may pay a little more, but my money stays local. It also keeps my neighbors in business.

I actually prefer the self-checkout and I've never had a problem with them. Over the weekend, I bought a Weber grill and a bunch of lawn seed and weed killer bags. Had no problem self-checking them out. A helpful employee scanned the Weber grill for me so that I did not have to try lifting that monstrosity onto the scanner.

Overall, I am very satisfied with Home Depot. Everything is easy to find (once you learn the layout of the store) and they almost always have what you want in stock. I buy all my major appliances there because they are sure to have plenty of replacement parts for years to come. For example, I tuned up my lawn mower recently and had no problem getting the right spark plug and air filter, etc., even though I bought the grill about 7 years ago!

The employees there are always pleasant. Maybe not as friendly as Wal-Mart but then again, the Home Depot people have it much tougher because customers are more demanding and have many more questions to ask about a specific product than at Wal-Mart.

I should also mention that during the winter, I bought a sump pump that was defective. I used the sump pump for nearly two weeks before the defect became apparent (the motor burned out). When I brought it to Home Depot for exchange, I figured they would give me a hard time about it being that I used it for two weeks and they might even accuse me of running it dry. But no questions asked. They gave me a brand new pump right away.

Home Depot has some flaws, but I never want to go back to the neighborhood hardware store (twice as expensive, limited selection) and lumber yard (who won't look at you unless you're buying enough lumber to build a house).

I love getting little shrubs for $3.33 -12.00 instead of $35 a whack at nurseries. I couldn't have landscaped my yard without HD. I also love the one-stop shopping.

Derbyshire is a whiny baby, the self checkouts at the home depot stores around my area work just fine, only to be clogged up by idiot customers who can't figure out how to scan an item.

The service industry generally stinks in the USofA. I'll keep shopping HD because I admire the way they told the Fed to stick it and buy their light bulbs elsewhere rather than cowtow to their outrageous and unrealistic minority employment demands.

Given the employee turn over rate of these major chains, keeping a racial balance in employees, at all times, is just not feasible or realistic and has nothing to do with the Feds imagined racism.

Home Depot was the first and only major store to back the Fed down on their unrealistic demands.

Our local HD is mecca for all the idiots in the area. All the stupid people go there to worship their god.

The local Lowes is managed by a guy who can't stand the thought of paying someone who doesn't spend every moment doing something. He never has more than two cashiers at a time, and none of the people who are supposed to be helping can ever be found. I think they are in back digging trenches and filling them back up.

The local walmart has gone to self-check. Any fool knows that walmart shoppers are way to stupid to check themselves out. The rule is no matter how long the line is for the single checker, it is faster than the one moron at the self-check station.

Everyone should be happy that all stores are going the 'techie' way with self-checkout via scanners. This improvement reduces the costs of the store by eliminating employees & their associated costs. This of course has/and will lead to much lower costs to us - the consummer. All it takes is your performing a task for HD...that used to be done by one of their employees. We all share in the greatly reduced prices - hooray.

My HD is great. Never had to wait for more than two in line ahead of me, not very crowded, nice folks, usually have what I need. I don't even think twice about going in there just for a few nails. The only bad thing is, its only about one mile from my house. Too tempting. Great store.

My experiences with Home Depot has been all good. And when I buy something that is faulty, they exchange it no problem. Overall I rate Home Depot VERY HIGHLY.

I gotta stop using this store.

Well then stop shopping there. Nobody is forcing you to shop there, are they?

I love everything about Home Depot except the fact that there are millions of other people who love everything about Home Depot and you often spend more time in line than finding your product (which is pretty easy because the store employees are very knoweldgeable).

I can't stand Lowe's. They are nice and clean and stocked full. But their employees don't know anything and getting the right help is impossible, since I can't trust any of their employees to know anything about anything. It's no wonder Home Depot is such a hectic messy place. Everyone shops at Home Depot. There's a BIG reason for that. Nobody seems to shop at Lowe's. There's a big reason for that too.

Frankly, I prefer the self check-out. I'm using them in Wal-Mart, B.J.s AND Home Depot. I much prefer that to standing in line waiting behind several other folks when I only have a few things. I can also do it faster than most of the checkers.

I've seen where a couple of Home Depot stores in my area have put those "self check-out" counters in...I avoid them like the plague.

Having said that, if you think you have problems at "My Toy Store", then I'll bet that you haven't been to a Lowe's Store recently. I honestly think that Lowe's has a personnel policy that insists that they hire only those that have been rejected by the United States Postal Service. No kidding!

It's been amazing to watch. Over the past decade or two, we (the consumer) have been conditioned to buy at the absolutely lowest price. Customers now insist on it. In order for the businesses to compete on price, they have to cut costs. Among other things, they've cut merchandise quality, inventory stock, and the number of employees and their benefits and wages. The result is that the consumer now pays less for an inferior product, made with inferior materials, by a company that has also had to cut costs to meet the price point of their customer (the store), the item is ultimately sold to the end customer by an unhappy employee who is often poorly trained, that is, if the item can actually be found.

I recently worked retail as a "fun" job. It was an incredible eye opener.

Call me a Luddite, but except for gas stations I really dislike the self-checkout deal. I'd rather deal with a person.

I was going to email the URL to this thread to Home Depot but they wanted too much personal info on the form.

Any inconveniences you encounter at a large chain store are just payback for turning your back on the Mom and Pop retailers of a once great America.

Home Depot and Lowes are like discount auto parts stores. You have to really know what you are buying. Many items should be bought at a good quality building materials store.
