If you're forced to be in New York, you may as well go to the Carnegie Deli for a corned beef on rye. Damned good.
It's pretty much the highlight of my NYC memories. The next best was the observation deck of the World Trade Center, but that's not doable anymore.

Where, precisely? And how long ago was that? Because most of the talk about Williamsburg being so "trendy" has been blown out of proportion and tends to ignore the parts that are still slummish.

Are you baseball fans? If so, the Yankees/Red Sox series is in New York that weekend. Games are sold out, but you can go watch the games at Mickey Mantle's restaurant in Manhattan

I didn't go to the prom -- I was asked early by a guy I didn't really like. So, I wound up at the Yonkers racetrack on prom night...

It gets closed down at 1:30 AM and opens at 5:30 AM. The cops corral all of the "partyers" who missed the last train in (from what I remember) the main entrance off Park Avenue.

For the first year I lived on Greenpoint Ave (where I think most of the buzz is about). The next four years I lived off Lorimer - I don't remember the name of the street. It was almost 15 years ago!!! But I did like living there, it was very Italian! I rented the top of a house that was owned by the girlfriend of a very big Mafia guy. While I was living there, he was arrested while he and my landlady were on their way to South America. It was front page news and the Feds questioned my roommate and I and the house was being watched for months. It was bizarre.

You're looking at a burger and a couple of beers at a tavern.
Not true at all. Lots of inexpensive places to eat.

My father takes me on night tours of NY all the time, it is the neatest place in the world. So much to do can't even think of it all, but if you want to see the stock exchange, you will need to make reservations beforehand. I always wanted to go down to Fox in the am, haven't done that yet.
Just standing in Times Square at night makes the trip worthwhile.
If money is an issue, remember the tkts booth near times square- it is a long line, but you get theatre tkts for half price.

Is Greenpoint Avenue more to the northern part of Williamsburg? If so, I *think* that's the trendy section.
Lots of Mafia guys all over the area. One of my dad's former patients was the wife of a *major* mobster -- he was near the very top of the list of the most powerful mob guys that Fortune published some years ago. A guy for whom I used to work married into one of the major Mafia families here in NYC.

5{d two rapes in Williamsburg. I see the hype in my paper all the time. New restaurants, good apartments. The "hot"place to live. I'm sure some areas of Williamsburg are nice but people have to be careful. That's true in any neighborhood though.

you can eat at plenty of places for $100 for two people. When I left NYC the average tip I left could barely buy a pack of cigarettes today......and that was just at lunchtime.
I'm pefectly happy having dinner out for less than $40 including tax and tip for 3 of us like we did tonight. And the leftovers will make tomorrow's dinner.
I don't miss living in NYC at all, at all.

I've been to Bedford near Clymer. You're right, still a slum. Also that area around Domsey's is still awful. Always under the impression it is a Satmar/Dominican battleground.
The gentrified part of Williamsburg is that area surrounding the first stop on the L--all the way up to Greenpoint.

That time of my life had to be the weirdest. My roomate and I had the upstairs of this house. The woman's name was Carmella (I kid you not), and her house was right out of Goodfella's. You know, Black formica and god stuff. She had like 7 poodles. Her life was Goodfella. She had been having an affair with this guy for almost 15 years. He had his family out on Long Island. She was well into her 40's. You could tell she was once a beauty, but she was kinda average at this time. He owned Grocery stores. He bought her the house and a beauty salon. Once a week a limo would drive up and all these big men would get out and go into her house where they would have their meeting and she would serve the food. After those meetings, she's come up and give us the leftovers. She wasn't very secretive about it and of course everyone in the neighborhood knew who she was and who he was. Needless to say, I felt very safe living there.
The day he was arrested, I remember saying goodbye to them as they rode away in the limo. She told me they were going to Rio. The next day he was on the front page of the New York Daily News.

Right -- the gentrified part seems to follow the L.
I took this picture late in the summer of 2001. As soon as I saw it, I knew it would have lots of use here on FR. ;)

Oops.. I meant Black formica and GOLD stuff. The God stuff probably would have helped her out though!

We really enjoyed having a slice of the fabulous cheesecake at Junior's delicatessen. It's in Brooklyn, I think at the Flatbush Ave. stop. (I don't know which line; perhaps NYC Freepers can give better directions.) It's interesting in general to get out of Manhattan.
I thought going inside the Statue of Liberty (at the insistence of my wife) was the biggest waste of time.
I second the nomination about Yankee Stadium. We sat in the box seats section, adjacent to (but not in) the notorious bleachers. We were close enough to see a fight or two break out and a half-dozen or so people get removed over nine innings, but weren't in the middle of it. If you're a baseball fan the Stadium is a tremendous experience.
