I'm surprising the wife with a surprise trip to NYC for our ten year anniversary next Friday. Neither one of us has ever been there so I'm looking for recommendations for places to eat, best way to see sights, etc.
We're staying in Midtown Manhattan at the Sofitel. Friday night we've got tickets to see Chicago at 8, and Saturday night we've got tickets to see the Blue Man Group. Besides that we're wide open.
So, if any NYC freeper experts would share their expertise it would be greatly appreciated!

Gotham Bar & Grill has a great prix fixe lunch, as is usually among the top three restaurants in the City in popularity.

Have fun, don't pay any attention to the gloom and doom crowd.
My daughter and her husband are there now for a long weekend and I have a son who works there.

You'll have plenty to do. Go to Times Square, if you can.

Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, NY Harbor tour. Washington Square, MMOA, Museum of Natural History, and so much more. You can't see/do it all in one visit!
Best wishes, have fun. NYC is a wonderful place.

What are you ages and do you prefer to step out and party into the night or do you prefer quiet evenings? Also, what are your spending plans for the weekend?

I don't know how long your staying but if your a baseball fan go see Yankee Stadium. They are on the road now but they may be there when you are. If not you can take a stadium tour when they are out of town. You see everything, Clubhouse, pressbox's etc. It's pretty cool. If there in town just go there and you can buy tickets at the stadium. They also have a store in midtown where you can get tickets. Many other sights to see. St. Patricks Cathedral is breathtaking. Also please, if you can, stop at ground zero. The size of the dustruction area will really shock you. Please say a prayer for my brother firefighters. 343 lost there lives that day in 29 minutes.

Take a tour bus that rides around for at least half a day.
Ride the subway.
Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, even if you think it's not for you.
Walk around Rockefeller Center.
Walk around Little Italy / Chinatown (opposite sides of Canal Street).
As you walk around look at menus and go back to someplace that appeals to you, or try the touristy, somewhat expensive, but not bad, Tavern on the Green in Central Park.

Last time I went, my best time was at the World Trade Center.
Oh wait.
And this state is going to go for Kerry by double digit margins.
Must say, avoid it.

You know I love you dearly....but I totally disagree with you...........I would no more suggest someone go to NYC than I would suggest anyone go to Delaware for a vacation (and Delaware is a helluva lot cheaper and prettier)

Grand Central Station - main concourse. There's nothing quite like it in the world.

Here are some random thoughts. Ill try to PM you some more tomorrow (Ill take a peek at my Zagats NYC for best bang-for-the-buck restaurants).
Gonzales y Gonzales is a terrific Mexican restaurant. Great décor, the longest bar in NYC and occasional Mariachi bands. (Bway and Houston).
Atomic wings are a great way to sample real Buffalo-style chicken wings. Look online for their 4-5 locations.
Metropolitan Museum has been renovated recently. Go there Fri & Sat. eves to have drinks at little tables overlooking the main floor while listening to live chamber music.
Brooklyn Heights (just across the East River) has a promenade with a great view of the Manhattan skyline. Gorgeous at night.
Peter Lugers is also in Brooklyn (best steaks in NYC, usually has a 28 out of 30 for food in Zagats). A so-so neighborhood, but the food is the best. Cash only, though. Grand Central Station has been refurbished and is worth a visit.
Youll want to walk along 5th avenue from 42nd up to 59th St., where Central Park begins. Lots of elegant shops, St. Patricks Cathedral, etc.
Lots of nice cafes, bars, and art galleries in Greenwich Village.
Empire State observation deck is worth it if the weathers clear. Very windy.
Top of the 6s is at 666 5th AV. Great view of the City below. Just have drinks, if you can.
Get a copy of the Village Voice when you get there, for info on music acts and clubs. Some jazz is always nice, or some blues.
Have to run. PM me if you want more info.

Two restaurants that are medium priced (for Manhattan). If you drink in your hotel room before dinner you'll save a bundle. And call ahead for reservation.
Cite/Cite Grill 120 W 51 St. Between 6&7 Ave. 212-956-7262
Ben Benson's 123 W 52nd St. Between 6&7 Ave. 212-581-8888 Great steaks.
As far as sightseeing, if the weather is nice, take a long walk.
