New York City Visit / Recommendations Requested
Myself | 04/16/04 | Me

Posted on 04/16/2004 6:48:36 PM PDT by TwoBear

I'm surprising the wife with a surprise trip to NYC for our ten year anniversary next Friday. Neither one of us has ever been there so I'm looking for recommendations for places to eat, best way to see sights, etc.

We're staying in Midtown Manhattan at the Sofitel. Friday night we've got tickets to see Chicago at 8, and Saturday night we've got tickets to see the Blue Man Group. Besides that we're wide open.

So, if any NYC freeper experts would share their expertise it would be greatly appreciated!

Tour the American Museum of Natural History and see the plantarium show.

Among the best in the world.

Take the circle line at night. Go to Times Square, Macy's, Toys R Us (which is across the street from MTV in Times Square), take the subway to the wall street area. See the pit where WTC stood. Go to Trinity Church and then St. Pauls. See the very inspiring display about the weeks after 911. It is a must see. Walk down Wall Street to the Fulton Fish Market and have some drinks along the river. Take the Staten Island Ferry round trip (great way to see the Statue of Liberty) Take the path to Jersey City, Liberty Park and see Ellis Island. Lots more to see and do, but these are some of my favorites.

Happy Anniversary. My husband and I our celebrating 18 yrs on Monday. NYC is THE best city in the world sans the liberals.
Try this site for restaurants: http://www.newyorkmetro.com/restaurants/. Here for attractions: http://www.nyc.com/home.aspx. Lots of links: Parks, events, getting around, food, etc: http://www.panix.com/~wlinden/nyc.shtml#events. You'll have a great time.

Mid Thirties, quiet evenings. Spending is relative. I'll pay for a good meal but probably nothing over a Ben.

I grew up on Long Island and lived in Manhattan for 10 years before I had the good sense to move. HOWEVER, when I took my husband there for a visit, we took a bus tour around the city and it was great. It's a good way of seeing everything comfortably, getting some interesting historical information and then you can decide which places interest you enough to return. It was really fun. We actually do that whenever we go to a new city. In Boston, another city I've been to many times, we took that damn Duck Tour. And wouldn't ya know it...we had a great time!

Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Sunday morning. The place is empty at 9:30, and you can enjoy it without the crowds.

My favorite parts are the Lehmann wing and the American sculpture garden.

If it's nice out, walk uptown thru Central
Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art OR the American Museum of Natural History. If you really enjoy art, plan for two days at the Met. Don't forget to laugh at the libs! Take your wife to Saks and have her try on something outrageous that you could never afford just for fun and a little glamour :-) Also, if you like Italian food and can't make it down to Little Italy, go to Carmines which I think is right near you. (My husband and I had our first date there, so it is very special to me but I am not kidding when I say the food is amazing!) Go to Ground Zero. YOu will be in awe of the size of it. Walk down Wall Street to Battery Park (buy a $5 knock-off watch for fun!) and take the ferry out to the Statue of Liberty and climb up it.

There's so much to do! You won't be bored that's for sure!

Peter Luger’s is also in Brooklyn (best steaks in NYC, usually has a 28 out of 30 for food in Zagat’s). A so-so neighborhood, but the food is the best. Cash only,

When was the last time you were in Williamsburg? It has become an EXTREMELY trendy town. Lots of fun.

Grand Central Station.

If you go in one of the areas with arches, stand in one corner and ask your wife to stand in the opposite corner, then whisper something - anything.

She will be able to hear you whispering on the other side of the room; the acoustics are wonderful!

We're there next Friday AM until Sunday PM. We like all kinds of food. Wife is more of a salad, chicken, baked potato eater. I'm game for anything. Would like to take in a Yankees game but they have been sold out for weeks since they are playing the Red Sox.

Circle Tour, boat ride around the island of Manhattan is a real bargain and helps get your bearings .. maybe 2.5 hours? Agree on going to see Ground Zero, but it's way downtown.

If your time is limited, since you're staying in mid-town, you could do Rockefeller Center, St. Patricks walk up 5th Avenue to the Plaza, have something to drink in the Palm Court, walk outside the Plaza and take that hansome ride thru Central Park. That's all really compact ... St. Pats/Rockefeller Center on Fifth Ave around 53rd Street, Plaza up at 59th and Fifth, beautiful shops (Tiffany, Cartier, Henri Bendel, Saks) en route. So VERY New York. Then walk back down Broadway (block or so behind thePlaza) to the theatre district/Times Square. It's a BIG city, with tons to do, so if time's limited, this givees an overview and will make you want to go back. Enjoy, and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY !!!

Chinatown and East Village -- almost like alternate worlds, in different ways.

Battery Park and the Financial District, if you're into historical stuff. http://www.lowermanhattan.info/todo/tours.asp

Venture away from the mid-town theater district and spend some time walking and shopping in the local neighborhoods. You will find local pubs and restaurants that serve excellent food and drink for a much more reasonable price than the places that the travel guides write about. If you're staying in the mid town area, then try walking over to First and Second Avenues between 38th and 60th street. The antique district is also a great place to spend the morning. The district stretches a couple blocks along 28th Street heading west from Seventh Ave. towards the Chelsea Pier, which may be worth a visit also. Where is your hotel located?

Okay two bear, I looked up your location on a map, your place is right between , fith and sixth avenue....just go up Fifth Avenue, Shopping all the way to Central Park which will be about fifteen blocks away, You will see Sax's fifth Avenue...take the wife in and buy something , Go to Trump Towers, and have coffee, and then Go to Central Park and just enjoy watching the Carriage rides, and people in the Park, The Zoo is on that corner also.... go back toward your hotel, shop bergendorf ( bathroom there, pretty nice overlooks the park), and just enjoy the walk back...plenty to see and do. Someone mentioned Rockerfellow Center that is Close to Sax Fifth Avenue...so you will not miss it. They have stores everywhere.

Women love to shop!
