Are true southerners the people who are still fighting the War Between the States? Do you mean Confederates?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Well, Lord help me...please forgive me for having to mention religion, politics and the War of Northern Aggression in my post.

Yes, we southerners are still fighting for states rights against the incursion of the federal government, just as we did the first time around. As conservatives, we should be 'confederates' in that cause. The 'noth' has caved in and given up, it seems, but we're still fighting.

Valerie, I am proud of my southern roots. And those roots go deep, as with most true southern folks. By 'true' I mean those that were actually raised (reared) in the deep south (not transplants) who have heard the voices of their great grandmothers.

Forgive my missing southern snobbery gene.
My father was born to an unwed teenage domestic worker in Detroit during the depression, and his family moved around a lot - as has mine since my husband died. No roots to write about. No great resentment to harbor for generations. No superior heritage to be proud of..... just plain Americans of today sans the old Euro-style elitism and feuds.

And no strong family ties, either? I am going to a family reunion this weekend in western Kentucky. O'Flood was the origional name of my great grandfather from Ireland. He was a debtor, thus the O in front of his name.

We are expecting over five hundred direct family members to be in attendance. No southerners, except my sister and me.

I have not seen my sister in a year and we miss each other terribly.

And this is your own grandmother? No wonder you don't understand familial relationships. If I described my grandmother in such terms, there would be a lightening bolt from heaven.

In my family it wouldn't have been a bolt from heaven but a boot from behind or a cane from above.

He was a debtor, thus the O in front of his name.

Perhaps you were being facetious. Whatever the case, the O was adopted for quite a different reason.

This single name system began to break down during the eleventh century as the population was growing and there was a need for a further means of identification. The solution was to adopt a prefix such as Mac (Mc is an abreviation) or Ó. Mac means 'son of' whilst Ó means 'grandson of'. -- Ireland-Information.com

I really enjoyed that bit of knowledge I do some geneology and this is good to know.

There are patterns that other cultures uses in naming their children.

No true southerners are welcome here.

What's that all about? My grandfather watched Atlanta burn, his great grandfather was born in Virginia the same year as Thomas Jefferson, and that ancestor's grandfather was married in Maryland in 1703. I am about as southern as they come and I have always felt welcome here. I must have missed the memo.

Baaah!
You're welcome here!
Without the Southerners here, it'd feel very empty and lonely.
(Besides, who'd I learn about the South from?)

No wonder you don't understand familial relationships

How does not wanting to fight the Civil War all over again translate to not understanding familial relationships?

Whilst I was surfing the Web in search of similar projects, I found Shmuel Mikel ("Sha-Meal Mee-Kel") and (his) PopGeek.com. PopGeek and Sporadic Thoughts have a common goal: to discuss the "social implications of technology".
