It was once said, 'there's no need for a conspiracy if everyone is on the same page'. It's true, especially about diet. Recently, lots of folks are pretty up in arms over Atkins. I'm now one of them, in the sense, I've joined their side. Lots of insulin in the blood is not a good thing in my opinion.
Why? My wife. She is, well was, very obsese. She was also diagnosed w/ PCOS 4 years ago. PCOS is where a woman fails to cycle, fails to get pregnant, and is typically very, very fat around the middle, not the hips.
But, during the last three months, we got radical. First, essentially zero carbs. Second, calorie restriction. She has been testing her ketosis level every morning using strips to maintain the range known as 'mild' ketosis. (She's been following something known as the endocrine control diet).
In short, she has lost about 30 pounds in 3 months. She has also had two back to back natural cycles. Typically she would have a natural cycle only once a year. She's never had two, one month, then next, in her life. We just might be able to bring a child into the world too.
Why post this info? B/C most of the PCOS and atkins websites have not a single good thing to say about 'mild ketosis'. I welcome anyone's comments and feedback about this.

As for weight loss, Atkins never worked for me. Though I stayed at zero-carbs for three weeks at the behest of my doctor, I felt terrific for the first two weeks, a little wobbly on week 3, but I didn't lose a single ounce of weight.
Last weekend, I started the Protein Power Plan Phase I, with 20 grams of protein per meal and 7-10 grams of low-glycemic carbs (blueberries or green beans or celery or whatever). After one day, my appetite took a nosedive and after three days, I've lost nine pounds. It's all I can do to cram in those 30-protein 10-carb meals, they're just tooo much to eat. And this from a sugar addict who can put away half of a half-gallon of icecream in one sitting. The very idea of ice cream makes me a tad nauseous today. Huzzah!
So, three cheers for Protein Power Plan. And for all diets that work and keep you healthy.

I'm still enjoying South Beach, and the weight is still coming off (albeit more slowly now). Lower-carb eating, combined with moderate exercise, has really given me better overall health.
Tough question... it's probably been a combination of factors.
I think in a lot of ways, the success is its own motivator -- I was actually in a bit of a funk for a little while, because I felt I wasn't making any progress, and then my latest weigh-in came back with a nice surprise, so I'm motivated again. In this respects, it's been easier for me than for the Mrs., as men have better results in general, and I had more weight to lose, which makes the numbers more dramatic.
Doing the plan together certainly helped. Obviously, the Mrs. can't do Atkins while pregnant/nursing, but she's basically eating "diabetic" style, i.e., avoiding sugar and refined flour, eating whole fruit instead of drinking juice, etc. That makes it easier to cope at home.
I'm not being overly strict or harsh on myself, either. When I started, I was measuring everything and counting everything to the nearest 0.1 net carb -- now I eyeball and estimate (the the nearest net carb) most of the time. If I go slightly over on a day, I don't beat myself up about it, as long as it isn't a habit. I allow myself a "mini-cheat" once a week where I can, for example, have a potato with dinner. Once a month, I allow myself a "cheat meal", where I can eat anything I want without worrying about the carbs (two notes: 1 - this is not a license to go overboard, and 2 - it is very important to be "good" the next day to get back into the proper state of physical and mental being).

The folks all on the same page work in the food industry, and they work in the FDA, and Ag Dept, and ESPECIALLY in the mainstream media. All these folks have something in common: they believe ordinary people are stupid. That's the bottom line. The enemy is thus, not them, nor sugar, but our own ignorance.
Yep, those who PREY upon that ignorance are foul, evil people. There are jillions of them, all of them longing for that big resort villa in the Carribean to retire to some day as they forget the folks suffering in the hamlets of Europe and America, and lately, China and Africa and everywhere else TV makes its inroads...
But, it is us and our own unwillingness to confront our demons that is the enemy; our cowardice is choking us to death, except for the few of us who throw off the yoke of thinking known as the T.V., do our homework, go AHA!!, and then make some relatively simple changes. It takes courage to do that. Why? Not b/c the changes are hard. Its because our cowardly friends, who themselves are asleep at the switch, physically witness the improvements .... and feel threatened, envious, jealous and overall just bad b/c they have failed in their own efforts to 'fix' it.
How many times have you heard of some lady whose lost a good chunk of weight, visits a friend, the friend KNOWS the diet is still in full swing, and she leans over w/ a plate of c.chip cookies, and says, oh, come on, take one, for one won't hurt ....
That's the voice of a coward all right. For that cookie lady is basically saying, hey, please don't be so creepy as to leave me behind!!!!
Cowardice v. Bravery. So much of the american story today is how could it be so many have forgotten how to make their children brave.

You are correct. Allow me to be more clear. It is an individuals obscene consumption of sugar that is the enemy. I don't blame the sugar industry, nor would I ban anything. People have every right to be obese if they choose to do so.

I wouldn't 'ban' anything either. But the sugar industry, like the cigarette industry, has full, complete, knowledge of EXACTLY what they are doing with the lies of omission they currently carry on in the world.
I refuse to condone their actions in the name of 'free enterprise'...
I did not go full protein. Just cut all sugared drinks and most bread, potatos, and pasta. The extra protein had the side benefit of curbing my appetite. Lost 46 pounds in 6 months and have been at target of 190 for a year now.
Oh, I gave up most of my beer for Vodka and Diet Sprite.
