[Long Cut]

Over at THIS THREAD, discussing Tom Clancy's movies, one FReeper lamented the lack of threads discussing books we all might like, like Clancy's, or those of Clive Cussler, Matt Reilly, Patrick Robinson...The list is almost endless, as writers with a conservative tilt have long produced works that appeal to a wide audience of Americans, not just conservatives.

So, ever willing to help out, herewith such a thread. I'm not totally motivated by altruism here, as I am working on my first book right now, and opinions matter to me. Also, I love discussing my favorite works. I started reading at the tender age of four, and kept most of the books I read starting with Treasure Island. I married an English Lit major, and even today I attempt to consume as many books as possible.

What say you , FReepers? Let's chew on some books, shall we?

I'll start off. My most recent book read was The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown. It is not conservative in nature, but it is thought-provoking in its own way. However, it felt rushed and too fast, as if it was intended to be made into a movie at some point.

Tom Clancy's most recent work, Red Rabbit, left me wondering what's happened to his former abilities.

I am looking forward to reading Clive Cussler's latest, as he's never let me down before. Long Live Dirk Pitt!

I simply cannot wait to read FReeper Travis Mcgee's book, Enemies Foreign And Domestic. I loved John Ross's Unintended Consequences, and Travis seems to be carrying on in that fine tradition ably.

I'm working on Miracle at Philadelphia by Catherine Drinker Bowen. It's a narrative of the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Very well crafted. .

I'm also reading Ollie North's novel on terrorism, Mission Compromised.

A few months ago I read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. That will remain one of my favorites.

You'll love it. It's all extremely realistic, except that the part about the space aliens landing in the amusement park with the dinosaurs seemed a bit of a stretch.

Hehe. I've got a suggestion for YOU, Arch. About a decade and a half ago, Barry Sadler (The Ballad Of The Green Berets) wrote a series of novels before his death, called The Eternal Mercenary. They dealt with Casca Rufio Longinus, the Roman Legionary who pierced the side of Christ on the cross. For his sin, he was cursed to wander the Earth forever, unable to die, and taking part in wars and battles throughout history.

He fought in the Wermacht in WWII, in the Special Forces in Viet Nam, with the French Foreign Legion at Dien Bien Phu, with the British in the trenches of WWI, shipped as a pirate with Blackbeard, and rode by the side of Genghis Kahn, just to name a few of his adventures. In all of them, we see the events of history unfold through Casca's eyes as he travels the world, waiting for the day of Christ's return, when he can finally know peace again.

He is not shown as some super-powered being, just as a normal Soldier of Fortune, albiet one with a GREAT DEAL of experience.

Check it out sometime. I'm sure a few copies are floating around. I've got the entire series, and I ain't partin'with it!

Of course you know I'm a HUGR fan of JRR Tolkien's trilogy "The Lord Of The Rings" and his other books, "The Hobbit" among others

But I do read other types like Sean Hannity's first book, I have his second on hold at the library but I just finished reading "Let Freedom Ring"

I've also read Biographies such as "Fighting Back" and "All The Best"

I'm also about to begin reading the first volumne of Jeff Head's "Dragon's Fury" series.

If you liked The Da Vinci Code, you might find interesting the Baigent/Lincoln/Leigh works, such as Holy Blood, Holy Grail, and Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum, both of which I'm re-reading right now.

My most recent book read was The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown.

I just finished it. The riddles were fun, but a conspiracy this massive involving so many people for so many centuries just had me rolling my eyes. Anyway, how much of a "secret" could it be if you can Google up a zillion pages about it?

If Leonardo Da Vinci lived 1500 years after Jesus, how would he have any idea what everyone wore at the "Last Supper" and what the place settings looked like?

For light reading with an underlying message of duty, honor, country, may I recommend the novels of Patricia Veryan. They are set in the Napoleonic Wars, and have a recurring cast of characters.

The Sanguinet Saga details the efforts of a villain to undermine the British government.

These novels are quite entertaining and the caharcters are weel-developed. Anyone who wants further information can contact me for titles.
