It's beyond obvious the recent Spanish election was manipulated by the terrorist attack on 3/11. In the aftermath of this event one can only ask how high does the level of complicity between the socialists and the terrorists go? Who were the contacts between the socialists and the terrorists upper echelons?
It's a reasonable question considering the stakes and make no mistake, they were monumental. The Spanish Socialists recapture parlimentary power. The terrorists have a public relations coup, humiliating Bush, Blair and company moving them back onto the defensive. Although it is quite a bold accusation, I believe if the investigation into the attack unfolds, it is the only proper conclusion.
Rather than with decorum, Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero reacted with unrestrained glee. I was reminded of initial reaction being just a little bit off. How many times have you ever heard the police say someone didn't act appropriately to the death of a loved one? At what was quite possibly the most horrible week in recent Spanish history, he didn't react with the appropriate solemnity and graciousness but rather unrestrained glee.
The first causalty's ( floods and tornados leave victims, wars leave casualties ) body wasn't even cold when Senõ Zapatero stated Spanish troops would be pulled from Iraq, the War on Terror was being poorly run and made derogatory remarks about President Bush and PM Blair. He then reiterated that series of statements the day the first casualty was laid to rest, dishonored by his actions.
The second policy shift was to reach out and ally Spain with the French and Germans, another diplomatic punch at Bush, Blair and other allies. The serendipitous receipt of a truce letter from the terrorists within a day of the change in Spanish foreign policy.
Spain was not necessarily the weakest link -- it was the most opportune and it had an islamic history. The claim of recapturing former lands could be used and was. The "911" connection was a cottontail clue, follow the white tail and it leads you no where but scratching your head. America was a tangential target, just to humiliate and a drive a wedge.
Makes you wonder what the Democrats have in store for this election.
