The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

hey... bailing out in some moments...

Well, I'd about decided you'd bailed while I was coming home from work. :-)

Guess I'll see you tomorrow unless you show back up when you get home. Goodnight - if it's goodnight! :-)

Thanks... not used to the time change yet, I'm wide awake. I shall defeat my lack of tiredness soon. Just looking through old story files to see what I can salvage.

Darn you, Fedora, I already had an Easter break project! I was going to research the Meiji Restoration and see how much the Kenshin people made up! Now I have to write. Must write. Must... write...

Hey Jen...

Rose and I spent some time (and money) in a Barnes & Noble earlier this evening... saw something in the graphic novel section that I can recommend as a good starter point for getting into comics.

Marvel Masterworks: Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 reprints Giant-Size X-Men #1, and Uncanny X-Men #s 94-100. GS X-Men #1 introduced the then-new X-Men, such as Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and others. Issues 94-100 featured the first stories of them as a team. Unfortunately it ends on a cliffhanger, but Vol. 2 is due out this month! ;)

Maybe you can combine your Easter projects by writing a story based on the Meiji restoration--like maybe the thieves could be after a Meiji sword art collector's item. . .

I saw those today! There were so many that looked so similar, I got intimidated. But if you say it's a good place to start, I will at the least read it.

Thanks!

O-ho, now there's an idea!

Finding some fragments that can be reused, with work. It's rather like forging Anduril from the shards of Narsil. You get something similar but totally new.

Yep, it's pretty much the beginning of the "modern" X-Men, so that's a good place to start.

You're welcome!

Excellent recommendation! BTW, I believe these same issues were also reprinted in Classic X-Men:

Classic X-Men renamed X-Men Classic with Issue #4

Also, Jen, there is a Spiderman version of Marvel Masterworks reprinting the earliest issues of that as well:

Spider-Man (Marvel Masterworks, Volume 1)

LOL!--nice application of Tolkien to purposes of analogy :) BTW, this gives me an image of a Japanese smith forging a sword--that could be a scene in the story, too, describing the forging of the sword in Meiji times and what was done with the sword then, either as a prequel or as a flashback.

This reminds me, there is a writer named, I believe, Eric Van Lustbader who writes thrillers based on Ninjas and stuff. Ever read him?

any of the riots and such lately near where you are

Been real quiet up here. The problems here are that rebels threaten the families of anyone who works with or supports the US. Many of them have stopped coming to work out of fear. Others have obtained permission to carry a gun and refuse to be intimidated by the rebels. Good for them. I started a new job yesterday working in the badge office where the locals check in everyday. It is only temporary till the other guy gets back from leave. It is really fun to work with the translator and interview the workers. I wish I had the time to tell you all about it, but it will have to be another day. Take care all. Steve

I suppose the "D" stands for diesel?
I wonder if that means that Cat used to make gas or steam powered dozers.

Also, they used to (and may still?) designate the actual engine models with a "D", such as the D 343, a 6 cylinder model from the 1960's with 450 hp, turbo and aftercooled. A great motor, truthfully, one for which I have fond memories.

Good to hear you feel sorta safe Steve. Sorta anyway is better than not at all. That job sounds fun to me too. I keep praying for those folks over there right along with ya'll. I know there must be many who welcome this chance for freedom as we know it. Lotsa nutcases too though. You keep your guard up and we'll keep on praying. Kimberly

I've heard of the guy but never read him.

Hmm, you know, I really have very little idea of how forging a sword works. Maybe I shall do some research. At least it would be a good excuse to use cool words in my story. But 'sakabatou' is not the right sort of sword, I shall make do with katanas or something.

('sakabatou' would be a sword with a blade on the side you don't hit with)

A piece of Tolkien news to pass on: the local newspaper today had an article on Marquette's Tolkien collection which mentioned that Marquette will be hosting a major 3-day Tolkien conference in October.

I am glad you checked in with us! - Been a lot of turmoil in the news, and I wondered what was happening around you. I can appreciate the stress of those who would like to work with us but have fear! May you and all that help our cause stay safe.

I can find that out for ya. My uncle that I'm always talking about staying with when I go home now has worked on Cats for 38 years.

Oh sure, I'd be interested to know, wondered about it for years.

I liked the 343, and suppose Cat still makes good stuff, but don't really know. I've heard a little criticism the last few years.

I bet 300winmag with his knife-making knowledge might be able to offer some insight into sword-making :)

Also, if you want to do research on this, a good book is:

Oscar Ratti and Adele Westbrook, Secrets of the Samurai: A Survey of the Martial Arts of Feudal Japan
