The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Here's the latest on the knife situation.

First, I've been in email contact with a major knife dealer who says he has three or four distributors for the CRKT 5700. He said he can meet or beat the $18 we've paid for the knives. He also thanked us for our support of the troops. More as I hear it.

I've ordered a $19 Ka-bar lockback that specs out very nicely. I'll report on that when it arrives. (I think I'm building a reference library of "approved" knives that we can purchase).

Finally, here's tonight's knife photos. The CRKT and Cuda neck knives arrived today, and here they are with our friend, the 5700.

Next is a closer look at the Arclite, including the extra-cost belt adapter. The knife is definitely good, the belt adapter, ????

Finally, a better look at the CRKT, including all of the attachment accessories. Besides the belt adapter, which seems only applicable for thinner civilian belts, also has more slots and tie-downs, and a pocket clip that can be screwed on the back.

Speaking of screws, the Cuda seems to be missing the tubular screws present with the CRKT, which are used to fasten the parts of the sheath together. If we buy the Arclite, it should be only as a neck knife, minus the $4 "attachment kit" that seems to be missing major components.

Both of these knives would make good neck knives, and would probably be best worn on the same chain as the dog tags. The CRKT also seems to have better carry options with its extra parts. If we go with a fixed blade, I'd give the CRKT a slight edge (no pun intended), but would have no problems with either one.

Plus, our options on folding knives are growing, and we might even be able to go back to our good ol' CRKT 5700.

That's it for now, more reports when more candidate knives come in.

I was glad to see the Japanese come on board in Iraq--getting Japan to de-pacify is a key to keeping the Chinese in check, IMO. They know they don't want to wake up Godzilla :)

Outstanding... if we can get more of the CRKT folders (and even at a better price?) then I'd have to say that's pretty much the hands down winner. Just MHO.

That fixed CRKT is intriguing though... :-)

Good work.

The Japanese have been de-pacified for a while now. I had the honor of seeing a Japan Defense Force (JDF) destroyer in the yards in Long Beach some [cough] long time back...

Even back then in the eighties, the JDF was in the bidness of making a no-nonsense navy. They had electronics on their bridge that we in the CG could've only dreamed of at the time. I'm pretty sure it is unclass now, but without giving anything away, think of this: 3D holographic display of the ship and it's entire environment of air, surface and subsurface.

Pretty whacked-out cool, that.

Hmmm... Remington 870 with extended mag tube?

Effective.

That's a good look for you, by the way. :-)

I won't ask how long back--LOL! :)

That sounds like a naval version of Tron! :) They've been doing some interesting stuff with invisibility technology lately, I noticed.

No, no, no. It's "Anyone else want to negotiate?"

Name the actor, movie, and scene.

An old Mossberg 500 with 8 round magazine, 18" barrel, no choke, that I've used as a boat gun for years. Also has a 28" barrel for bird hunting, and is surprisingly OK at that, though hopelessly unbalanced in that configuration.

The salt air ruined the Parkerized finish a long time ago, at the moment it's finished with matte black engine paint, Chevy, I think. Still works good.

My wife took the picture the other day, it makes the little thing look like a cannon, I thought it was kind of humorous.

Way cooler than Tron...

But not as cool as what we got cookin' now.

We're getting so good at warfighting now that I actually worry that we're getting *too* good at it. Look at the Iraq war as an example. Here we took out a whole country on a scale that hasn't been done in decades, and we did it in record time with casualties on *both* sides that were negligible by anyone's expectation of war. In the entire history of warfare, from the Greeks to the Romans to the modern ages, there has never been a campaign that was so successful so quickly. Not even the German "lightning war" was as overmatched in it's march through Poland.

I don't mean to minimize our losses in any way. Every loss of a soldier is an incalculable loss to a family somewhere. I can't even begin to ponder that. Compared to the losses in prior wars, however, this one was a mere fraction of anything ever, anywhere.

But there is a risk in making war too antiseptic. Then it becomes too easy to decide to do. In a sense, war should always remain ugly and hideous. That's what makes it something to be avoided. It takes someone of exceptional character to have this sort of power at his disposal and yet still not wield it unless there is no other option.

I can think of no better reason to NEVER elect another democrat to office than this.

I'm not always sure exactly where they were going with that movie, but the general absurdity of it really appeals to me.

Did you acquire the antique Oscar Wienermobile yet?
