The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

It was a really great trip. Friday, they ran me all over the department. Gave me the full tour - classrooms, labs, the grad student cube facility. Downside: grad students all use Linux (I actually like WinXP!). Downside: grad students are two-three to a cube. Talked with over half the faculty, and probably a dozen grad students, including all three American female Ph.D students. I may be exagerating, but not by much.

Saturday, had morning coffee with another grad student (they tried to have me talk to students with a lot of different professors) and then went around town with a nice girl who's just started her doctoral work out there this semester. We drove all around town, then up to the mountains, then hung for a while. It was great.

Today started at 5:45, getting ready to catch the shuttle... met a really cute physics guy on the shuttle who came up to check out the physics grad department and is from Pittsburgh. I may have to check out physics department events... some of the guys in CS were cute but mostly not.

Anyway, I really liked it. Money's going to be tight because I won't room with someone I don't know, but... er, Rosie, it's a really, really nice place... dog-friendly, healthy, everyone is nice and intelligent, all the coffee shops have free wireless internet... other than housing, things are pretty darn cheap... the IT department is in the same building as the CS department...

I'll post pictures of mountains shortly!

Suzi, forgot to mention something that might interest you, ro not: I was really, really surprised at the quality of the professors' credentials. I mean, CSU is not a top twenty school, but some of these people are apparently near the top of their fields! I guess it shows it's not where you go but who you work with. And a large percent of the grad students are published before Ph.D. Nice....

No, I bought and hauled 'em myself. Work is good, hard work is better. Good lesson for those boys- adds to their "grit" quotient. Kids need more grit these days.

There's a boy up the hill, must be about 5 or 6, who isn't allowed to play in the backyard by himself. A parent must be out there with him, watching every moment. I realize there are places in this country where that kind of supervision is necessary, but we're in the boondocks up here. He's got neighbors on all sides who can keep an eye out, if need be. But that kid needs to burn off energy and develop some self-reliance/independance. He's got to have backyard adventures to learn from. It is really, really sad. I guarantee you the kid'll end up on behavior-mod drugs someday soon- for being so wound up.

He's got to have backyard adventures to learn from.

I agree with that one wholeheartedly! Nothing better for kids that age then running off energy with lots of backyard play! And it don't hurt me day none to get out there and play with 'em either! :-)

Oh, you want pics?

This is a reservoir in the mountains above Fort Collins

Another view of the reservoir, looking east toward the desert.

Heading into the mountains....

This one is actually of three different mountains/ridges! The red ridge is closest, then the grey hill, and the pointy peak is a mountain some distance off.

My connection's really slow tonight so that's all I can post now.

Cool--although it kinda reminds me of the ride up the mountain at the beginning of The Shining :)

We found some fast growing evergreens (we'll go with Leylands rather than the other hybrid called green giant)- will buy and install next weekend. Thank goodness for RDOs!

She looks so serious over everything but the jumps. (She has to really think about the contact obstacles - of course I'm saying "TOUCH! TOUCH!" in a mildly hysterical voice over and over, so she doesn't forget to stop with her feet in the yellow zone.) She LOVES to jump - she also loves tunnels. Sometimes she just goes nuts and runs around barking - it does happen. She's kinda a looney dog, and she's young, and she gets overexcited at the shows with all the people and strange dogs and the loudspeakers going full blast.

You can admit it at work. I am, in fact, and all humility, always right ;-).
