The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I'm gonna RANT!! Here goes!

Matthew is taking Awanas. Used to love it. Now they are making him memorize the books of the Old Testament. He has got some mental block about it and just can't do it. But they won't let him go on until he does it. He learned a bunch of verses but they won't let him go any further till he says these books of the Bible.

What's the point of it, I ask you?

So you can find them? Can't any moron just look in the contents page and find the book their looking for? I learned them when I was a kid and promptly forgot them. I never have any trouble finding a book...they're listed right there in the front!

So you can find them quickly? What's the point of that? If I want to find a verse quickly, I just run a Google search! Can't get faster than that, I tell ya.

The whole thing seems ridiculous. I can understand memorizing verses...verses are good to have tucked away in your heart. But just knowing the books of the Bible in order seems a bit unnecessary to me.

It's got Matthew not wanting to go to Awanas and me so irritated I don't want to take him.

Trini emailed me this pic and story, said she doesn't know when she'll be able to freep but wanted to share it!

This is at Maracas beach in Trinidad. There is a stray horse (yes, a stray horse) that frequents the beach. It gets there at about 10 am, finds a quick snack, takes a bath in the ocean and comes out onto the sand to sun. People on the beach feed the horse and it is really quite tame. None of the people from the fishing villages seem to know who owns the horse. Only in Trinidad! :-)

Actually, two batches of four is ok. Space them out at least 8 and preferably 12 hours.

Aleve is a baddie...Aleve will REALLY mess up your liver if you take too much. And Tylenol too...but mainly because people don't take it serious.

Wasn't it 3 Aleves you took? I seem to remember it was Aleve. And you took it with alcohol...oh your poor liver.

I can remember stuff for a short period of time, but was never good at long lists. And I'm not dumb. And I know darned well Matthew is ANYTHING but dumb!

One suggestion, though, if they're being REALLY insistant...we used to have a tape with a song that had the books of the Bible. "Wee Sing Bible Song", I think. I can still remember some of that even after all these years...so maybe that'd be an option just for now?

But yeah...I just know more or less the order and can flip through and find it. That's all ya need, in my opinion!

Lots of times the ways to test that someone has studied something are arbitrary... I can't remember my capitals of all the states either without the silly song I made up to remember them by.

Make up a song where each line has an answer.... he could remember that better than a list and it might make it more fun! ;~D

If I need meds, I usually have to take them at 8 hour intervals, no more.

When we learned the books of the Bible, we used a song. It was really easy to learn but I don't know how to sing it for you online! But you could try looking for something similar. Anything's easier if it's a song.

And it does help to know the books, it's faster to flip around in a sermon if you know Isaiah comes before Daniel...

LOL! Looks like we all came to the same conclusion!

My Mom used to make up songs for us to remember EVERYTHING by. Our address has changed because of 911 implementation, but I can still remember the song she made up so we'd remember our address and phone number if somehow we ever got lost. And songs for some prayers and for math...etc.

Well, we have wild horses in some parts, but a tame stray horse is an interesting concept. Surprised no one has taken him home unless he isn't sound.

Is the song both old and new testaments? The ones I learned had different tunes for each. They might have been Wee Sing...

Isn't it odd how songs stick with you forever? We had a couple great tapes when I was a kid. A Noah tape and a Daniel in the lion's den/ Firy Furnace tape, they both told the complete Bible stories but threw in songs.

Even today, my sibs (the older ones, at least) and I will break into the songs randomly.
