The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...

Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

But not yet weary are our feet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

No, no, I meant I have a first printing of Bring on the Bad Guys.

I do have Mr. B on tape, though, too... ;)

Oh, that's what you meant--LOL! Yeah, I have that one, too, but unfortunately the cover is torn off :( I used to have a bunch of that series which I wish I still had (esp. The Marvel Fun Book), so I'm glad to see they're reprinting them, though I wish they'd have used the original covers.

Hmmm... homeschool online dating service... I have this weird mental image. I went to the PA homeschool convention several times, and probably half the attendees were Amish or Mennonite. The women all wore the same pattern of dress and they had the caps - I'm imagining girls like that leaned over a keyboard typing...

My family's into 'courtship'. However, we girls are approaching marriagable age and the boys haven't shown up yet. So we're sort of taking bets on who's going to be the first to give Dad a heart attack. I have a feeling it might happen next year. Meg's studying abroad, Jill's really starting college, and I'm moving cross-country.

Don't date without 'honorable intentions'! What's the point? Friendships are better than dating if all you intend to do is break up. Says Jen from her years and years of experience... well, I had one crush. Six years ago. At least he was a good kid.

OT; this is sounding 'series' indeed.

We bet it was the pleasant February weather as so accurately prognosticated by our resident KC weather weenies. :-)

Heh, you got that right. Yeah I never thought courtship as presented in lectures I listened to at homeschooling conventions in the early 90's was practical. I live thousands of miles from my folks and while I really value their opinion on the subject bringing someone home to meet the folks is not exactly convenient. I don't date in general. Mainly because I don't meet many women with much potential and the ones I do meet live very far away. So basically I HAVE to put my trust on the subject in God because random chance ain't going to do it.

Yeah, that's exactly it. And it's best to get to know someone pretty well in a group before going any further in a relationship.

My Dad had all of us read books on courtship and marriage, and for the most part has very traditional views, as do I. On the other hand, I'm 27...I don't expect a guy to ask Dad's permission before saying hello.

Rosie; well so far, she has been "approved" by both our cats so one big hurdle was successfully negotiated. (whew) She is fitting in well and has been on several walks around town or as we also call it, "the shire". :-)

Heh, I remember sitting through a couple seminars and thinking, "Ok, I'll do this and this, but not this..." some of the ideas seemed ridiculous! Like, don't ever allow the couple to be alone. So they're never going to have a private conversation before they get married?

Of course, most of the homeschoolers doing this marry off young. I'm practically an old maid. But... if the daughter goes off a thousand miles and meets someone, is the dad going to fly in and give the boy a hard time?

Very few of the people at the conferences had courted, themselves. That's why Joshua Harris is one of the few speakers I respect, and he seemed to have a more 'moderate' approach to courtship. Dating, as it is practiced today, doesn't work well. I think the valuable idea behind courtship is that it should be to discover whether the two people are suited for marriage, rather than whether you can have a good time.

I defiantly like the idea of courtship. Any woman that does not get my parents seal of approval is right out. I just have to do the prescreening myself.
Dating for fun and sport which is what I would call the 'normal' version is a huge waste of time. I would rather watch pain dry.... ok not that but I am sure there are more entertaining things to do.
The PA con? Do you mean the one in Harrisburg? I was there with our company several times but that was like a decade ago.

Yeah, well...the job market "back home" doesn't seem to be picking up...even Glaxo is laying off so I hear. I could probably pick up some temp stuff but I'm getting too old for this job hopping stuff. And I'm having a hard time thinking of a company back there that I'd want to work for.

"Spanking time!
Bad touch!"

In somewhat unrelated and totally useless info: In teh Game "Half-Life", if you go into the console by hitting the tilde ('~') key and type the following: Speak "Bad man! Bad Man. Get the bad man!" the game's built in voice synth will say just that to everyone in multiplayer (Or just you in single player mode..)
It also says other things if you tell it to...

No, but if you wanted to test him, you could tell the guy to call your dad and ask.

Heh, what I think would be appropriate would be the guy asking you if he could ask your father to court you. It's your life, not your dad's. But asking the dad shows some respect. And that his intentions are honorable.

Yes, I went to the Harrisburg con twice. Would have been... 8 and 9 years ago. Wow. Long time. I have no idea if I saw that company there.

Josh Harris was a pretty good speaker on the subject. I think something I wrote was in the magazine he use to do. He could speak well but considering he is like a year or two older than me I could not put to much weight behind he sage advice. I went to dinner with him and his dad (in a larger group of vendors) after a con in Chicago one time.

That's the bottom line. One of my brothers is now courting / dating a girl fairly seriously. They're mostly spending time trying to determine if there is anything major they disagree on. Yes, they do go to movies and some other fun stuff, but finding out whether they're suited for marriage is their first priority.

He is disturbed by the fact that most of his friends who are dating seem to spend most of THEIR time together making out or doing things that avoid much conversation...he says it's almost as if their afraid to go into any depth since they'd probably find out they weren't right for one another. But it's a waste of time and emotion, IMO.
