The Hobbit Hole VII - But not yet weary are our feet...
Posted on 03/15/2004 1:45:41 PM PST by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
But not yet weary are our feet...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

OT; well, I think so, but she was adopted out once before and then returned after after three days to Wayside waifs, I don't blame her for being a bit skeptical. The previous family said, "we don't want her-she won't bark" Huh? What? We don't understand that attitude.
But if they had't returned her, we could not have adopted her. Samantha didn't bark for about two months after we got her. Lsa figures the dog has to feel territorial before it will bark to comment on the state of the world. :-)
Wneighbor; yup we did, there was a picture of Gypsy on post 1952 but the site deleted it sometime earlier today, probably when the computer volunteer showed up. :-)
Hair; we think we will take advantage of the weather as well.

Well, I'm glad you got a new one! And I really like the name.
Congratulations! To you and HER!!! She's got some good folks now.
Dunno about people that have a won't bark issue. My neighbors would appreciate that, though Smeags doesn't bark unless another dog is near her yard.

DOUGHBOY UPDATE
For those of you who missed the house-building saga (lucky you!), my uphill neighbor is one mighty tacky man, an uncouth slob (and I'm being nice about it). During our construction, he dumped his trash on our property and stole gravel and other building materials.
Our property is behind his as viewed from the road, and our house is angled such that a large portion of his back yard is visible from our front-facing windows. Not a big deal, really, because there is a nice row of trees between the two properties that make a passable screen. The whole development used to be a pine tree farm so all the trees are planted in tidy rows and very close together. Being so crowded the trees grew upwards very quickly but only the very tops are green. The bottom 2/3 are dead branches. Not pretty, but still screens the view.
'Till last weekend. Doughboy decided to remove the lower branches that mercifully screened the view. He's got a bit of a Tim Taylor complex in that he was using his chain saw to remove little twiggy branches that could easily be broken off by hand or sawn close with a stroke or two of a small saw. Nope. Chainsaw. He sawed for days and piled his truck high with brush (which we found scattered along the road for miles, when the twiggy trail went cold we found the brush pile thrown into a small hollow by the side of the road. *sigh*).
To better clean his property, he used his lawnmower to break up the branches on the ground into smaller pieces. He was itching to use the lawnmower for *something*, I guess, 'cuz he hasn't to produce much of a lawn. It's mostly dirt. Anyway, I've never witnessed anything funnier: him pushing that lawnmower through the trees and the machine sputtering and dying 'cuz the branches choked it up. He was finishing the job this morning. Too funny.
Sometime recently some cinder blocks showed up, along with some lumber and a pile of gravel. The gravel looks suspiciously like the gravel used by the developer (*hmmmm*). And I believe he's going to build a shed--- right on the property line. I think we'll have to make an emergency run to the nursery to get some large, fast-growing evergreen trees. grr. Because his backyard is on a hill, he is having to build up footers to make a level platform. He even has a new tool- a tech-y looking sight level on a small tripod. So far, we have footers four cinder blocks high on the down hill side and not a bag of mortar in sight. It'll be level alright, but wobbly as heck. Couple that with the fact that one of the footers is sited on the exact low spot where all the runoff water from two yards and the road runs.... this'll be interesting.
*DEVELOPING*

BTW, I really like the look of that Gerber.. but may be too expensive for our purpose... dunno... leavin' that up to you. :-)If the knives start getting a bit pricey, I could omit the laser engraving, and maybe just etch a tiny "HH" somewhere out of the way, like I did for the snips and the radios. The idea is to get the knives out to the troops, whether our advertising is prominently displayed or not.

Heya, got my soil additives and cinder blocks this weekend. Gonna start assembling my square foot garden tomorrow. Will do two 4'x6' sections, and two vertical trellises. Wheee! The peat pots are packed- I'm just waiting on my seed order from Burpee.

We had a stray we picked up that had obviously been abused. It was something like 4 years before we every heard her bark :(

I was thinking that when posting about these recent knives. It may be that as we find more and more soldiers to whom we can share the cost cutting on engraving might be prudent. At some point, not necesarily now. I think you're the one to judge that point.
Did you mail me any snips? Don't know if I need to look or not....

Troop Photos from Smaagee!!! Hey folks, Steve emailed me these two photos to show you all! It's good to see the guys enjoying a little something. :-)
Steve says, "The one is of a wonderful fruit smoothy they made us and the other is some of the workers in the shop. They love us, cause we are in there nearly everyday. They teach us about Iraq and we teach them about the US. Thanks for everything. Got another package the other day. The Gardettos were well received. Thanks again. Steve"
Hmmmm... I think I could use one of those smoothies!!! Looks good! :-)

And I believe he's going to build a shed--- right on the property line.Make sure you know where your exact property line is. Get it surveyed, if you have to.
Then wait for Doughboy to finish building his edifice before letting him know it's on your property. I don't know if there is any permitting process where you live, but you should get all your legal ducks in a row before dealing with this loser.
