''Monster'' star and best actress nominee Charlize Theron never imagined awards nominations.
In fact, back when she was making the film she couldn't even envision a crowd of close to 1,000 sitting down together to watch the drama based on the life of lesbian serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
''When we closed AFI, 800 people watched it at the Dome. I never ever imagined 800 people watching this movie at the same time in the theater,'' Theron said from New York City, where she prepping for the film's junket.
She also had the added task of producing the film in addition to starring in it.
''When that credit comes on, I am very proud of that and proud that something new has entered my life.''

That is not her in the picture you posted. I went to see Monster the other night even tho I wanted to see some mindless comedy. Charlize Theron gives an unbelievable performance. I knew then she would be the Oscar winner. Powerful!

The Hours is a lesbian story. I didn't see it but I read about it at screenit.com. A local high school teacher made her students see the movie as a class assignment. I don't know why but I think it's terrible. Of course no controversy over that class assigment. You only get controversy if you want prayer at football games or something.

>What's so fascinating (and scary) about this film is that I actually began to sympathize with Wuornos!
The film business LOVES
creating "sympathy" for
killers. The guy who
made "Lord of the Rings" [!]
got his start with a killer
lesbian movie:

"A starkly original film-going experience based on a true life story, this film from New Zealand director Peter Jackson (Dead Alive, The Frighteners) is a stirring drama that offers up the unexpected. The story concerns two girls, outcasts who become best friends, whose bizarre fantasy life becomes more intense as their bond becomes increasingly more obsessive. When the mother of one of the girls tries to intervene and split the girls apart, they kill her and stand trial for murder in what is to this day still a celebrated and controversial case. Kate Winslet (Titanic) and Melanie Lynskey create two sympathetic and yet uncomfortably eerie characters in riveting portrayals. Featuring some startling and unique moments of visual brilliance as well as a disturbing love story between the two girls, Heavenly Creatures is at once both unsettling and beautiful to behold. --Robert Lane" |

What the award was for was acting, and Theron acted her heart out in this film. Amen.
And that is one beautiful woman.

I saw a TV movie about Wournos a few years ago. It starred Jean Smart ("Designing Women"). I've also seen some bios of Wournos on Court TV and a few other channels.
I don't know if Wournos was the first lesbian serial killer, because 1. there are few female serial killers & 2. There's little information about them. I do know, because of Court TV and TV news, there's plenty of tape on the real Wournos during her trials, sentencing, and, of course, taped police interviews. That's something that's only been available in recent years.

I think, with all these lesbian characters winning, the Academy liberals are tired of beautiful, "helpless" women in movies, and want more "aggression."

My two cents....
She is a okay, plain jane women. Not ugly, not gorgeous.
Don't worry, I did not go out of my way at all. :~)

There are. Usually, though,
they are just called wives . . .

I agree.

Well, she suffered from depression, if you want to call that mentally ill. I don't know anything about Virginia Woolf being a lesbian, though.

Well, good for you that your world is full of such women.
I think she looks and talks and moves like an old-time movie star.

I wasn't trying to insult her. There's no way she could have won Best Actress if she wasn't okay looking.

I don't know if Woolf was a lesbian either, but back then (as now), lesbianism was fashionable amongst the smart set. And Woolf was a member of the smart set.
Don't think her marriage was too happy. Maybe that's why she wrote, "A Room of One's Own"?
To: King Black Robe
The Hours is a lesbian story. The Hours is not a lesbian movie. I think it would have gone right over the head of the average high school student and it's certainly a dark movie, but it's not a lesbian film.

Charlize Theron exposes a dark chapter of her life to Diane Sawyer Thursday night on "Primetime." The South African beauty talks for the first time on TV about her abusive father, and the night her mother shot and killed him in self-defense when Theron was 15 years old.

There's no way she could have won Best Actress if she wasn't okay looking.Tell it to Kathy Bates!
Charlize was not pretty in her role.... she was as ugly as the real-life woman she portrayed.
