Looks like our #2 is seriesly considering UT Austin for Grad school! He'll be down there the last weekend in March to check the place out. He's going over to UMass Amherst this Friday. They've offerend him a great financial package, so he's waiting to see what UT's gonna come up with. I think they'll give him that info when he comes for the visit.

He didn't want to have to fool with a car; is there public transportation, or could he get around for the most part on a bike?

Probably. 95% probability. I'm still waiting to hear from a couple schools but they're far and away the best offer I've had. Plus I really do like mountains.
